Gonna mount my droid to a RAM ball directly in front of me (stem nut mount area, NOT handlebars) It's not connected and I don't use it as a cellphone, just as a fancy, android based, ipod-touch with a GPS chip.  I'm testing out SYGIC GPS (which downloads maps to the SD Card), and it connects to bluetooth headsets.  Also, LOVING the audiobook thing.  Touching it to control it will not be an issue.  If I really need to input a new address, I'll pull over first, and my audiobook needs no controls other than "play" to get it going before I start riding.

I'm thinking of three options...Not too convinced on the third, but I guess it IS an option...

1) Ram's Finger Grip.

Seems like it'll hold it securely enough, can attach a charging cable to it, but if it rains, I'd need to throw a ziplock bag over it.  Not the most elegant of solutions, but I'm sure it'd protect it from rain.

2) Pelican 1020 with clear cover.

Probably the most "elegant" solution as it's water resistant. Would be a little more of a pain to attach a ram ball on the back, and get a charger in there without compromising it's water resistance.

3) Ram X-grip.

Don't know how much I trust a spring loaded, four prong grip.  At least long term.  And a ziplock back would have to be th solution here too.

Which would you recommend?  I don't use the GPS often at all.  Maybe once a month?  And worst comes to worst, I can put it in the glovebox and receive the directions with spoken streeet names through my helmet.  Just wont be able to see it.  Just wondering what other people's thoughts and choices have been.  Thanks.

I like the simplicity of the X-Grip holder. I'm not worried about wet weather capability so that's not an issue for me. Also, since it's adaptable to different sized devices it eliminates the hassle of getting specific mounts.

As far as trusting it to hold the device, It's definitely more secure than the Cell Buckle, which I bought just to see if it was any good. It does hold my phone securely ( I rode around with one of my old back-up phones mounted in it) but just feels really flimsy. and it flops around so much I couldn't make sense of what the phone was showing.

Good luck with whatever decision you make.

For the bike I like the finger grip better because it holds on all side.

The X grip is good for the car. I have seen one in person at a resent trade show and it does have good holding power but I suspect that if you hit a good enough bump on the bike and the unit slides out of the bottom it will hit the ground.
