I received this email from my friend Jodie last night.  She's a good friend of Tom's and works with him on the Cal24 Rally.  Please keep Tom in your thoughts today!   Inlove

Quote

Hi All,

Please say a prayer or keep Tom Melchild in your thoughts. Tom is currently in ICU in O’Connor Hospital in San Jose.

He can not have visitors at this time (other than family).

About 11:15am on Thursday, 1/19/2012, Tom will be in surgery for an infection that is spreading….and there are some other issues that are adding to the difficulties.

Kaarin posted this on FaceBook: Thank you everyone for your thoughts. My dad really needs more happy thoughts and prayers. When he survives this he will have a very long road of recovery. Thank you for helping us out!

Kaarin and Jack ask that you hold Tom in your thoughts tomorrow and in the days to come. As soon as there is more information, we’ll make sure we get it passed on. And until you get another email here, please hold off on calls to Kaarin or Jack, as they need to be available for the doctors and family members.

Thank you.

Tom is Cal24Master here on STN.

Good thoughts going this way. Everyone I know who has done the Cal24 has great things to say about it and I can't begin to imagine all the work Tom puts into the event.

Here's an update on Tom!

Quote

Tom made it successfully through his surgery and is doing better daily. He is still in ICU and has 24/7 nursing care, at the hospital. He can not take calls at this time, nor can he have visitors. If anyone calls the hospital for him, the nurse assigned to him must answer the phone…taking time away from Tom…Please, at this time…do not call.

The illness he has…(and family has asked for privacy here) is whoopin’ his ass.  It will take a while for him to recover from this surgery. Kaarin and Jack have been in to visit with him daily and are passing on your greetings and encouragement…Kaarin has his phone and can get his emails and is reading them to him…If you have a good joke, please pass it along!

Knowing Tom, he will probably make it as difficult for his caregivers to take care of him…as it is for him to be in that bed! As I get further information, I will pass it along to all of you.

I can say from my time in a hospital, that a phone call from a friend is worth a whole lotta medicine.

True, soon enough -- though at this point, the family is specifically requesting no calls (see my previous update).  I'll let you guys know as soon as that changes!!

Kaarin (Tom’s daughter) posted this on Sunday on FB:

Dad is doing great! So far so good, he still has a long road ahead of him, but they should be weaning him off of the ventilator tomorrow or Tuesday. I talked to the surgeon this morning and she is quite pleased with his progress. I think they under estimated him, not much keeps him down! I’m looking forward to seeing some more pictures. Thanks everyone for your outpour of love and support!

----And just a reminder…Tom still can’t take any calls----

Latest!

Quote

Hi all,
Tom is doing much better. He’s been transferred to another hospital and is alert, responsive, and healing!!! It looks like he will be in for a few more days, and then (hopefully) released to go home to continue to recoup. He does not yet have access to his phone or computer…so it will be a few days more until he does.
Meanwhile, keep those good thoughts flying his way...Will post more as soon as I know.
