Slightly used Duc 1198s from someone who just has to have the newest latest and greatest 1199 that Ducati just released.


Never seen one in the $7-$10K range.

Used ones seem to start at about $11.5K

The Ninja 1K is defiantly on my like list. Too much coin though. And the odds of finding a used one up here is not likely.

I paid $9600 + TTL for mine last October.  Not too bad for a new litre bike that MSRP'd for $11k, IMO.  The bags and heated grips did add another $1k to it though.

I did what you are talking about doing and went from a GS500 to a GSXR750 4 years ago.  Love the 750 and don't want to replace it.  Great fun in the twisties.

GSXR is on the list. Due to the price, performance, and availability of used models, it's probably right at the top of the list.

A 675 would be on my list as well as a 750 (along with the Duc 848).  Of the three, I've only ridden my 750.  I got my 06 in 2007 for $7000 US.  That should be in your price range.  But all the magazines seem to think these three are pretty similar, so I don't think you would go wrong with any of them.  One thing I really enjoy about the 750 is that it has some torque and I can wring its neck at times.  A friend of mine went from a 600 to a 1000 and said he really missed being able to hear the engine sing at high RPMs and shift.  With the 1000, he was doing 90 at the end of 1st gear.  There weren't too many places he could really get on it hard.  He ended up selling it and going with a KTM 990SMT.  Now he's enjoying revving and shifting again.  Just some food for thought.  You might not want to go too big (i.e. 1000).  My 750 is plenty fast.  I've taken it to the drag strip 3-4 times and done 11.2 and 130 in the 1/4.  Fast enough to warp time for me.  I know the magazines make it go faster, but there's a significant difference in skill level there.  The launch can be a bit worrisome  Bigsmile.  I about lost it once.  Rear broke loose.  I had visions of pretty black and yellow plastics suddenly not looking quite so pretty.  Kept it on two wheels, though.  At any rate, I enjoy the twisties much better--which is what the 750 is made for anyway.

So my budget has been cut in half. The good news is that I still have a budget.  I can go $5000 now. I am actively searching but biding my time to find the best bike for the best deal.
I also need to sell my EX500 first. That should not be difficult.

I was leaning towards more sport like  a GSXR or CBR, but with my bad knees, I am going back to a Bandit or SV650 perhaps.

Bikes are like wives. My first one I was so excited to get. Rode the shit out of it, abused it a bit (but didn't tell anyone) and then got bored with it. My next one I want to keep around a little longer, but still dont want it to cost me a pile of money.

Maybe a blonde next go round.

In that price range, the ninja 1000 makes my loins burn.  What a damned sexy bike.

Personally, I'm looking towards a Tiger 800 in the upcoming years.  I commute on the bike (RARELY touch the car), so I'm ok with a bike that does great "real world" riding, with the capability of having some fun on twisties when I get out to them.  The Tiger with its fuel economy, and load capacity, seems to be an EXCELLENT candidate for long rides, overnight rides, and handling two-up/touring as well.  

Or lately, I've been kinda eyeing the Honda CB1000.  Haven't heard much about it, but if you want fast, my old Honda 919 was a fun fast bike, and this is essentially the same bike brought back with some newer technology I'm sure.

I am in the mind set that I don't want more tham 750cc just so I dont get myself into trouble. I always said just because the power is there, you dont have to use it. I'm pretty sure I would try though.
What are the ergo comparable to?

In addition, there is a great deal of fun to be had with a less massive bike. Too many people think that bigger is automatically better. It isn't necessarily so.

Tru dat!  I really like the fact that my 500 is very light and I can toss it around easily. Even with the bigger engines, a lot of horsepower is used just getting the tank to move.  Another reason for the lean towards Gxr 600, CBR 600, etc.
