It's a shame. He talked a good game about honor and integrity. Lots of people looked up to him, but when it really mattered he showed exactly what he was made of and how he valued football above all else.

yep, im with the majority here. although he was a phenominal coach, he sacrificed his own advice for his success. some young lives paid the price for that sacrifice. for that, i hope he rots in hell. perhaps he can use kim jong il, hitler, stalin, and a few select others as his coaching staff down there and get a few scrimmages going...

A pretty cynical bunch here. Y'all actually believe a person gets to the level that Jo Pa did without trampling on someone else? Good luck with that idea.

This statement contradicts itself. The cynical would have no doubt about JoPa's questionable shenanigans during his career, especially considering his final denouement.

Despite a report suggesting the contrary, former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno remains alive, although he is in serious condition. His son Scott verified this on his Twitter account, and many others have also reported that Paterno is still alive.

Joe Paterno in my opinion became the fall guy, he did as he was required and reported this crime to his superior, who dropped the ball. JoePa having gone directly to the police would have been fired for disgracing the school, so you see he is between a rock and hard place, he fulfilled his legal obligation. In the mean time how come the kid(s) never told anyone about this coach???? Don't blame Joe, blame the kid(s) and Sandusky.

Actually there is a law that says educators (teachers, profs, etc) MUST notify the police when they suspect abuse.
Paterno preached integrity and honor. But when he was tested he came up FAR short of either. As a result kids continued to be abused by his "friend".
As to the whole blaming the kids statement?

I think he meant McQueary.... I HOPE that's what he meant. If not, then he meant blame the kids for not reporting what had been done to them, which shows a fundamental lack of knowledge about victims of sexual abuse and qualifies as yes, fucking insane comments.

Not a JoePa apologist, by any means....
But I can't help but wonder if "some" of this is a function of age / generational elements. Folks of this (my parents') generation seem to really struggle with what to do when they encounter this or other examples of sexual deviantcy in the real world....especially when it's found in institutions that they have long held in positions of trust / leadership.
Witness the whole sexual abuse scandals within the priesthood, for example. Many of those who fall within the "greatest generation" can't seem to process / deal with some of the examples of deviant behaviors that they see in the world....

One big thing I've disagreed with over the years is the elevation of Joe Paterno to some sort of deity status within the PSU community.
He's a just man, granted, one who had a very illustrious career coaching football, but still a man who made some bad decisions along the way.
Was he good for PSU over the years?? Sure. But he's not a god, and some of this crap I've heard about "The Board of trustees killed him. He died of a broken heart>'
is pure BS and almost comical.
Way too much emphasis on school sports programs if you ask me. Take half of that money and spend it on new educational programs, equipment, technology for the
school, the bulk of the students.
The football program involves a small number of students and people in relation to the bigger picture.
