Bluepoof and I were discussing this, as I was reading her blog, clicked on a picture and inadvertantly closed the blog link when I thought I was just closing the window tab. I find this annoying (same window) whereas she said that she got tons of complaints when her blog was set up to open a link in a new tab.

There is no real point to this poll other than to gauge what the STN masses feel about such a trivial topic.

I open images by clicking my mouse wheel, which spawns it in another tab whether it likes it or not.

If it's on my iPad or iPhone, I usually force them to open in new tabs, too.  Images that open as an overlay of the current webpage or the bane of the devil.

It really depends. Generally I move you along in the same tab. But, well for example, I wrote a page that gathers lots of data from different places to present a morning report dashboard. One page with performance thumbnails, filtered logs, account reports, and dings for almost 500 systems. There are links to go to more detailed reports and those are jump offs to a new tab vs having to return to the page and reload all the data.

In your case, it could go either way. Since you're on the same site, I'd probably be looking at the tabs for the original site or just click the back button.

Personal preference is that links should mostly go to a new page (again, if you're following a progression like blog posts it should stay in the same tab).

I'd prefer to get a list of options - same window, tab, bookmark for later, porn, new window, etc...

I am so stupid. I shouldn't have made this poll while I was at work.

The options I really wanted to post were "new window/tab" or SAME WINDOW.  Oh well; it was pretty much an exercise of boredom anyway....  Embarassment
