Yes he is riding on the "hard pack" wet sand -- but he is still taking air.

Riding on hard packed wet sand is the most fun I've ever had on a bike..........did it a few times on the Oregon coast back in the 60's on basically the bicycle tires we had in those days.  Had my nearly new Honda CB160 in perfectly controlled power slides all over the place.  If you ever get the chance try it and see,   a truly fun experience.........no knobbies required ............. Cool

There's more than one streetbike in that race.  Looks like there's a Z1000 too, and another naked bike I can't quite ID.

I was thinking the same thing.  Unless you wash the sand and sea salt off right away and then lube.

I rode my bicycle by the beach at a leisurely pace, not right on the sand by right next to it in the PAVED sidewalk.  After the hour long ride, the chain and sprockets were filled with gritty sand!  Had to hose it all off, but even then, some sand made it into the other little nooks and crannies of the drivetrain.
