OK.   here in Elizabeth colorado.. we are at 18 in of snow and counting.. not supposed to stop till mid day tomorrow.  so Gwyn and i have a snow day.. so.. bored and i am a fair cook.  i decide to see what i have laying around ..  found the ingredients for a good thick beef stew.   and then i get the bright idea that some home made bread would go good with the stew.. stew turned out fantastic.. bread.. well lets just say it was OK if dipped in the stew.. LOL.  i forgot to add salt. so really bland. then i used yeast that expired in Nov of 10.. LOL.. so kind of flat too..  so that said..  what is your keep you warm on a cold snowy day food. . always looking for new things to try..  i will try and send some pics from my phone to my comp and and add them to the post..

Shawn and Gwyn.

Spicy Italian sausage zucchini soup
Smoked pepper venison chili
Split pea and smoked ham soup

I think you have to define "snow day", though the OP is clearly talking about watching it snow.  Apres snow fun, is a different story. Beer is the first thing we do. Wet beer. By that I mean no heavy Ales etc .. usually Pilsner. It is good to serve a cheese fondue before dinner. A classic involves white wine, cheese and good bread. We eat it about 4 times a year and have an electric fondue. For dinner, a go to sleep meal is in order. Small steak filet, rice and and a killer salad.

For watching it snow .. in our house we make soup. French Onion or a serious refridge cull.  I love French Canadian Pea soup made with garbanzo and some ham ... yum.  When ingredients allow, a Boston style Clam cHowder with fresh bread and butter. We add BC prawns whole ... Yep ...one can endure alot with the smell, taste and fun of cooking on a snow day.

well. snow day .. keeping me home from work.. with a dodge 4x4. and a jeep cherokee ..   ya .. not so much traction.. but being able to see... 18 in and counting and 30 mph winds.. so snow day. LOL.   and will be mostly gone by next weekend.    typical colorado winter...   talked the wife into calling off as well. she has a 50 mile drive to work.   so a rare evening together.. she works nights mostly.. med field.  enjoying that..

...and now three. Preferably with rye, but last night's was made with bourbon.

Per snow food, another vote for green chili made with Hatch, poblano, and jalapeno peppers. Mine then calls for tomatillos and pork shoulder.

Think I know what I'm having for dinner...

I like to whip up a batch of chicken fajita chowder and some corn bread on cold winter/snow days (not that we've really had any yet).

Chicken Fajita Chowder
1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts, chopped
1 each medium red, orange, and yellow pepper, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 cups water
2 cups frozen corn
1 cup uncooked rice
1 17.6 oz bottle Goya salsa verde
1 4 oz can chopped green chiles
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup (4 ounces) shredded Mexican cheese blend
1 cup (8 ounces) sour cream
Tortilla chips and minced fresh chives, optional

In a Dutch oven over medium-high heat, cook and stir the chicken, peppers, and onion in oil until vegetables are crisp-tender. Stir in the water, corn, rice, salsa verde, chilies, and salt. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 35-40 minutes or until rice is tender. Remove from the heat. Stir in cheese and sour cream until cheese is melted. Serve with chips and chives if desired.

I made Cincinnati chili this morning for tomorrow's "big game."
