so, my '11 f800r only took 3.2 gallons of fuel after my coasting some 3-4 miles and pushing the last block, with the engine dead due to an empty tank.

the tripmeter read 178.5 miles, and i'd been averaging 49pmg since the bike's inception.

i fully expected arounf 4 gallons to fill the tank.

should i be filling it diffrently than a car?  my older bikes' tanks got full, as i peeked and stopped filling when the gas hit the bottom of the tank's neck.

confused in california,

I had the same thing happen on my F800ST. I thought I had run out of fuel BUT it was the first of many stalls caused by a faulty computer program. I would hope that in the 11 model that BMW would have eliminated the problem. If you are under warranty, I would call the dealer right away. Good luck..

your bike has a 4.2 gallon capacity. if you only put in 3.2, then the problem was NOT due to running out of gas. time to consider something else. bike is under warranty- like still kickin' said- time to let your dealer figure it out.

i agree, thanks.  emailed dealer, who confirmed no petcock (my other bikes are from the previous milleneum  Bigsmile, asked deler what to do.  the dealer's been great, but is some 175 miles from here,

typo on my part.  3.2 is what it has been taking, after yellow warning light comes on and i ride a bit.

3.5 is what it took after it died and would not start.  it started right up after the fillup.  it does not seem to be gas pump dependent.

ps  my double flats (stapler) mushroom patches seem to be holding - must have picked it up after pulling off to the side of the road with the dead bike

Almost sounds like the pickup isn't reaching the bottom of the tank anymore.  Is there a filter on the bottom of the fuel pump that dips down to the bottom of the tank?  Perhaps it fell off, leaving the intake a little short.

thanks for the tip.
i made an appt. with a local bmw dealer, given that the bike's under warranty.  it does not appear to be a user error.

one of the reasons i went with the bmw is their 3 year warranty.  the mpg and the advertised range were also a main draw over other 'sexier' bikes.

I'm interested to hear the outcome, good luck.  You're right that the F800's do get exceptional mileage (as long as you can use the whole tank! Wink ).

175-miles to your dealer is nuts.  Surely there are closer ones in the SF area that can do warranty work.

Is there a difference when you fill the tank with the bike on the sidestand, vs. on the centerstand?

The Euro spec for my F650GS's tank is a bit over 4 gallons, but the U.S. spec is 3.9 gal (I think) because of the U.S.-spec evaporative system. Is there something similar for the F800R?

Other than that, I haven't a clue.

US spec on both the F8GS and the F8R is 4.2 gals, according to dealer websites (confirmed by my own experience of putting in 4.1 gals into my GS).

Weird.

you'll love this - the local dealer says what i got is all there is.

unreal - all the web sites claim 4.2 gallons, but somewhere in the fine print internal bmw docs, the USABLE capacity is 13.5 liters, whichcomes to a bit over 3.5 gallons.

The website certainly does NOT contain that info.  Talk about misleading!  Is it reduced because of ABS or are all F800R's that way?

The local dealer said the true information on the fuel capacity is for all the f800r bikes.

BMW USA said, yeah, it is inconvenient.

At least it happened to me in daylight, on a downhill, only 3.6 miles from the nearest gas station.

The double flat tire I picked up while coasting on the side of the road was also 'inconvenient.'

It's a lot more than inconvenient - what a bunch of liars.  One of the main reasons I did not purchase the StripleR by Triumph was the larger gas tank the f800r had.

Bummed,
Ferenc
PS  The dealer thought the tank probably is 4.2 gallons, without the fuel pump (!U&$#*@$) that is inside it.  What a crock.

StripleR is 4.6 gallon, btw.

wow that is a good size tank.

what i looked at were various reviews -
the 5/2011 cycleworld had the Stpripler's range at 175 miles and the f800r at 197 miles, whereas the 3/2011 mcnews.com had the bmw at 218+ miles (avg.)

according to the f800r obc i've been averaging a steady 49mpg (not on regular unleaded, though).

wonder who regulates nationwide laws on such claims - i read some lady sued a car company for inflated mpg and got some $10k for the misleading ad.  mpg is one thing one can fudge, but tank capacity is hard to inflate, liters or gallons.

arrgh,

I'll have to point this thread out to my buddy who's got an F800ST. Interesting.

I think that bike's getting somewhere around 60 MPG.
I got a chance to ride it once and it was  Inlove
