Why not buy a 2003 FZ1
«

I am going to buy a bike in the near future. I am considering a 2003 FZ1. I am looking for problems other
FZ1 owners/riders
have had. I do not want a bunch of replies about other bike and why they bikes are better then the others. I am looking for items for the con list. I am sorry if I have offended anyone but I do not want this thread to degrade into an argument about why brand x is better then brand y. Thanks.

I have a 2005 and I love it. Best all-around bike i have ever had and most riders ride the piss out of it with no problems.
If you want to know more specifics let me know.

I had an '03 and still would if it wasn't taken from me.
I can't really think of any cons for your list except maybe the mirrors suck. Great bike.

I own an 05, same bike as the 03. Absolutely a fantastic bike, with no major problems. 250 lb riders, or very aggressive riders tend to upgrade the suspension. Long distance riders may purchase aftermarket screens, heated grips and/or perhaps the lower fairing. I'm always on the lookout for a better bike...I haven't found a better all rounder than the FZ1. I know if I ever sell it, I'll regret it.
Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions. Oh yes +1 to the
www.yamahafz1oa.com
site

Have you considered a Ducati???
Sorry, I just couldn't help myself. You were just so "firm" when you laid down the law.
FWIW, I did the FZ1's, especially the 1st gen bikes.
Cheers,
Joe

My con list:
Weak electrical system but it's the same deal as other sportbikes
Suspension needs work for average sized Americans
A bit top heavy for the short legged
Mirrors afford a great view of one's elbows
Minimal wind protection
Speeding tickets can get expensive which in turn makes insurance more
I put almost 30K on mine in under 3 years. I'd own it today were it not for the F$%&ing maintenance crew in my office complex pouring tar sealant on the road surface 1/2 way through an entrance ramp.

I had a 2002, and I loved it. The motor was fantastic, silky smooth, very strong, and great milage.
Things I didn't like:
1, Carburated so it had a choke, and needed warm up.
2, Suspension WAY to soft
3, Stock windshield
6, Too fast. I couldn't keep it anywere near the speed limits. I always found myself riding +100mph
I put just under 30000km on my FZ1 and had no issues at all.

Had an '02 put 25,000+ miles on it rode it to sturgis from Ca and back did a bunch of high mile days etc, great bike!!! mirriors are the problem as everyone said,
When I purchased this bike I weighed in at 350 6'2 I set up the stock suspension and this bike handled like a dream. no electrical problems, no power problems we dyno'd the bike with jet kit,K&n and Yosh slip on @ 129 to the rear wheel, lower the bars with GYTR stuff and handlebars and that made it really comfortable for me. The speedo was the most accurate of any bike I have ever owned. At an indicated 150mph on the speedo my GPS said 147.
A friend of mine is looking at another bike and I suggested a FZ1 to him. just the other day. by far one of the best bikes on the road today and very much over looked.

01 fz1 30,000 miles, Ivan's jet kit(sportbike zing) , sargent seat, bar end mirrors, Rizoma bar, respring front and rear, CSW rear shock revalve. Bike priceless. Worst feature, finding right windshield. Oh, and likes rear tires.
