To accommodate Southern California riders heading to the WCRM, the next Bay Area dinner will be moved to Thursday, May 17, 7pm, at:

Frankie Johnnie & Luigi Too!
11891 Dublin Blvd (@ San Ramon Rd)
Dublin, CA 94568
Tel: (925) 828-9380
http://fjldublin.com/

Please RSVP on this thread if you're attending! I hope it'll be well attended, and not like last year, where only 4 people showed up even when we moved the dinner to Thursday, none of whom were heading to the WCRM.....

I can technically do either (Milpitas isn't too much of a hike for me).  But I voted for the closer one, obviously.  If one accomidates more SoCal riders than we should go there.  WE'RE GETTIN' THE BAND BACK TOGETHER!

I've eaten at Giorgio's and I like it. They have really good pizza. Uh...I'm pretty sure I can't make it cuz I am at work at that time, but just am saying that Giorgio's is good food.

I'm abstaining from voting since, as with almost everything in my life right now, I have to play everything by ear until the last minute up until June 2. But I like both places! Lol

I have to be at work at 8pm in San Ramon.  So there's only 1 place I could make.  It'll be good to see a couple faces before WCRM.

There's more than one FJL too btw..  There's one on El Camino in Mountain View as well as one on Prospect near Cupertino.

Any of them are fine by me but I've never been to Giorgio's so I voted for them.

Going up 280 on the Peninsula is quite fast, and lights though SF are timed pretty good in the mornings. The traffic may actually be worse in the East Bay...  someone else please correct me if I'm wrong.

Assuming you're overnighting in Dublin and slabbing to Fortuna, the outbound route would be 580W toward the Bay Bridge, then up 80 through Berkeley and over the Richmond bridge. Your biggest risk during morning rush is the MacArthur Maze, where all the freeways merge on the approach to the bridge. Also the 238/580 interchange in Castro Valley can get pretty bad but if you stay to the right you can avoid it. I don't know your plans, atypical, but if it were me I'd grab a room in Emeryville on Thurs after the dinner. In the morning, bada-bing you're out of the rush hour and on your way. Hope to see you at FJL's.

Hm. From Dublin, instead of the slab, may I suggest routes that include Redwood/Grizzly Peak/Skyline, then down Marin to the Richmond Bridge? No traffic problems there...

Forget all that hassle.  Highway 1 through SF is lame and actually not on the coast (that's the Great Highway).  And 1 just north of SF is so-so for a little while.

If you stay in Dublin overnight, take 680 north because you can use the carpool lane (traffic be damned) and cross either the Benicia bridge (highway 680) or the Carquinez bridge (highway 80).  Then just start heading west until you hit water, then, obviously, hook a right.   Bigok  As part of heading west, look for Lucas Valley road, I highly recommend it.  This route is almost entirely reverse commute so you won't encounter a lot of traffic at all and you can stay on the freeway until you're free of the bay area drivers.  Don't forget to have $4 ready for bridge toll no matter which way you go.

Here's an idea...I could telecommute on Friday (or at least go into the office late.) I'll be happy to give you a personalized tour of the East Bay fun roads - everything bsd just mentioned, plus maybe even ride with you as far as Stinson Beach or Olema. Now THAT sounds like a nice way to start the work day.  Thumbsup

Ya think? I like the twisty part between Mill Valley and Stinson.  Didn't they just repave a bunch of that too?

I guess I just really hate traffic, because you're right, getting out to Stinson is freaking cool but it isn't worth the hassle through SF traffic for me.  If I ever went out there it wouldn't be during morning commute.  Depending on which route you take out of town there are a ton of cool roads in Marin county.
Golden Gate bridge = highway 1
San Rafeal bridge = Lucas Valley
Carquinez/Benicia bridge = Marshall-Petaluma

Say it with me now, Northern California ROCKS!

If you're crossing any of the bridges during commute times you can use the diamond lane and don't have to pay tolls btw.

Even though I've only met one person on here so far, I'll be there so I can meet more.  But as I already said, I have to be at work at 8, so I'll have to take off at 7:45.

If someone needs a place to crash, I have a spare bed at my place.  Must like dogs and cats.

I didn't see any Bayarea threads for the ride up.  So for the Friday ride up to Fortuna, who/when/where?  I plan on taking 580, as I live next to it, up to the Richmond Bridge, and then 1 North.  If there's any SoCal people going along, they might want to take the Bay bridge, and through the City to the Golden gate.

Bradley,

atypical1 is crashing at my place in San Leandro. Even though I'm not going to Fortuna, in the morning I'm going to take him on a little East Bay Hills tour - Redwood from CV to Skyline, then over to the Wall for a break. If it's a sunny and clear morning, the Wall is a great photo op at that time of day. Then we'll probably go down Marin just to show off the steepest street in the bay area, and go thru city streets to the freeway and Richmond bridge. I'll go at least as far as the Arco at Tam junction, then I'll have to decide whether to continue north for awhile, or head south to the office.

It sounds like you work a swing/grave shift. What time are you planning to leave to ride up north on Friday? We want to head out fairly early (since it's a work day for me, and a long ride for atypical.) It would be great if you ride with us. Or anybody else for that matter if they want to ride along - we can meet at the Peet's on Redwood Road in CV.

This would be a perfect spot to meet up. I was thinking the same place, say around 7:30-8:00 am. This way all of those that will be headed north can meet up in one spot. that would be the Bay/so-cal crews. I have a fun little route planed for the ride up if anyone would like to try it? or we can just all ride the coast all the way up? Its all good to me Good people, fun roads who could ask for more Bigsmile

ok, so this looks kinda like the Bayarea hook up thread now.  The Arco at Mt Tam junction is a good spot, there's a Starbucks for coffee, and plenty of room.  I was planning on taking Lucas Valley over to 1.  The bad is that it'll bypass the nice new part of 1, but I haven't been on Lucas Valley before.  I also plan on taking it at a moderate pace.  Should be about 300 miles.  I'll probably stop in Bodega bay for some clam chowder.
jwhite518, Yep, I work messed up hours.  I was kinda planning on leaving around 10am.  But I could leave a little earlier.  Of course I'm always running late, so I probably won't really get on the road until Noon.

Yes. Define crazy.

I didn't name it... my friends Kenny and Steve suggested the ride and I just showed up... I didn't think it was too hair ball... I was more shocked when a CHP Cruiser got on the loud speaker and warned the crowd assembled at the Arco that the road is wet and be carefull crossing the double yellow... mercy...

The only name I've ever heard regarding that event is the Sunday Morning Ride. Haven't done it on a Sunday morning in years because I think the pack thing is too dangerous. It doesn't take much for some squid to mess up your day. And if the CHP isn't giving you safety advice, they're busting you en masse. So I ride alone, or with a few riders I trust.

Hey, anybody still have a sofa that isn't spoken for?  I (sadly) haven't got anything lined up, nor any relatives in the area to impose upon...

I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks.

I'll be at the bay area dinner as well-- never met any of y'all up there.

Does anyone have a spare patch of floor I can spread my sleeping bag out on?  BMW-K, Ksann, and Rogue can all vouch that I'm a decent guy, don't smell too bad, and am rather entertaining...  I just have a hard time justifying dropping the money on a hotel...

I did note in a post that I have some room if someone needs a place to crash.  You must like dogs and cats, actually, you better love them, because they love visitors.  I have a couch and a bed in the living room.  I'm near the intersection of 238 and 580, about 10 miles from dinner.  Just pm or email me to discuss the background check.  It would be best to meet at my place before dinner, as I have to go to work for a few more hours after dinner.

A questions for the locals, after dinner, about how long should it take me to get to Belvedere/Tiburon area (my brothers place).

I am trying to decide if I should spend the night there, or somewhere closer to the restaurant.

thoughts?

Typically after dinner traffic is at a minimum (as we usually don't get out of anywhere until 9).  Traffic isn't as heavy up here as it is in LA.  Google Earth says from Dublin to Tiburon is about an hour so..

light traffic -15 minutes
If you've been there before -5 minutes
If you haven't been there before and you get lost easy +20 minutes and a few phone calls
If you haven't been there before but you have GPS or a good map +5 minutes

I'm guessing around an hour or so.  Bigsmile

I won't be at the dinner, but if you all are meeting at the Arco, I'll be there &:30? It will be nice to meet you and to ride up with a group. Riding solo from Camarillo to Bay area.

7:30 is pretty darn early for me and atypical. We're coming from the East Bay, and it'll probably take us 60-90 minutes to get to the junction. Any chance we can make the launch time a bit later?

I was also thinking of a slightly different route.  I was going to take Lucas Valley to 1, up to 253, then 128 back to 1, and on up to Fortuna.

Well how about we try this Kitkite and  I will be staying in pleasanton Thursday night and we will be leaving with the rest of you. If we all leave around 7:30 or so on Friday morning, we should be able to make it over to mill valley around 9 am by taking advantage of the comutter lane, and splitting. Once we all get to the mill valley meeting spot we can take different routes over to the coast, if you so chose?
we can meat up along the way. for the rest of the ride up.

Excellent.

If anybody wants to take a little ride on the east bay urban backroads, meet at the Peets Coffee in Castro Valley, the corner of Redwood Road and Castro Valley Blvd. It's in the same shopping center as the Safeway. Kickstands up at 7:30. First stop, Bradleym's house to wake his ass up.  Wink

Ok. I've changed my mind... I think I'll swing by the dinner dinner to meet you guys and have an adult beverage or two then split maybe (w/Ksann) get a room out near Mill Valley so I can sleep in a bit too. After reading all the threads I can't miss this gig and the opportunity to get together before Fortuna! What is the best way to Dublin from Carmel/Monterey? I riding Hwy 1 up and I'll be in Monterey around 12 or 1.

Hm, depending on how adventurous...7 hours is a long time from Monterey to Dublin.

You can catch 152, then up 101 a bit, catch Mines Road through Mt. Hamilton then cut back from Livermore. Or you can go up more of 1, catch 9 all the way, or 9 to 35 then cross the San Mateo Bridge. I don't think you can completely skip the slab though.

Just don't get caught north of the San Mateo Bridge (92) on the Peninsula, and stay away from SF. Otherwise you'll have to deal with the melted freeway overpass, and you don't want that. Smile

With 7 hrs to spend, I'd go to Santa Cruz, 9 to 35, genuflect at Alice's, then go down 84, cross the south bay, go up and over Hamilton (stop at the observatory?) and then just fart around in the east bay. Mines Road for sure, maybe Tesla/Coral Hollow, maybe Patterson Pass, maybe even Mt. Diablo / Marsh Creek / Morgan Territory. All kinds of options.

That sounds fun, but I'd make a small change.  Instead of going down 84 from Alice's, continue North on 35 to Kings Mountain, and take that down to 84.

And I would always reccommend Mt Hamilton.  It's a great view of the Bayarea, and cool seeing airplanes flying below you.  The Western side always seems sandy.  As soon as you start down the Eastern side, the roads are clean.  And gas up before you go up, there's no gas between San Jose and Livermore, about 65 miles.

OK, just bumped the reservation to 20 people. Post or PM if you can't make it at least a day ahead, please.

Thanks for making room for me. I'm really looking forward to this. Thanks also for the different route ideas. You're right, that is plenty of time. I'll probably stop quite a bit to check stuff out.

Alice's isn't a bar, just a cool breakfast/lunch joint. Drinking and riding = bad, but that's another thread...

Alice's itself is really nothing spectacular. It's really just shorthand for the whole motorcycle hangout scene that happens at that intersection. There's also 2 gas stations and a market/deli at the same spot.

Alot of Bike rides end up at watering holes of sorts. I generally trust people to make their own decisions... "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink"

I'm guessing BSD just hasn't had time to upload his pics yet.  Here's two of mine:

I never really take all that many pictures at the dinners 'cause I'm too busy eating. Lol

Wow, thanks for having the SoCal bunch to your dinner.

Good food, great company.

A few of us were quite late getting to dinner, but it was well worth it.

Does this mean that I have to come back for another?
