Step #1: Buy the Madstad windscreen bracket ($80)

That may be the end of your buffeting. If it's not, there are many aftermarket windscreens to mount to it.

Just what garry said. The Madstad bracket with the stock screen solved any issues I had. Great product.

The V-Strom's ugliness offends the wind so it tries to pummel the rider for buying it.  Lol

Nonsense.  The V-strom is beautiful motorcycle.  Probably the best multiple use motorcycle built today. Your mud fence dog-ugly motorcycle is just jealous.  Razz

WIND CONTROL:  For me, it was a $5 trip to home depot to fix this problem.  Simply angling the windshield back toward the rider a bit worked just fine for me - and I experienced some seriously bad buffetting prior to making this enhancement.  I've got the process stickied to advrider's beast wisdom thread and pics are also on stromtrooper as well (you must search since I don't have the link anymore).

Dialing in the pre-load on both the forks and rear shock helped my cause a bit too.  Some guys bring the steering stem down on the tubes about 1/2" or so, but I don't personally as I take my 'strom off-road.  Those guys suggest it really helps, and I don't doubt that it does.

I have an MRA Vario Touring screen (the shorter one) on a Madstad bracket. I never had an issue with buffeting, but was trying to reduce wind noise. I don't have the quietest helmet, but it gets pretty quiet if I scrunch down a little behind the screen. I'm 6'3" and tend to ride fairly upright, so I'm more of a problem child than someone a little shorter. Personally, I'm thinking of trying a Givi since it's a few inches taller than my MRA. I might try to score a used stock one (cheap) first just to see how it works with the Madstad. Might be cooler in the summer when a bit of air flow on the body is a good thing.

On the K2 Strom I recently picked up, I cut a triangle opening in the bottom of the screen. It seems to have taken care of most of the buffeting. Yesterday on road it started to get buffety at 100mph but it was also very windy! Going a 100mph on a fire road the day before I didn't notice any buffeting, but I was a little busy manning the Tiller and scaning for :eek:sections. I don't know how those Dakar guys, and gals do it! Crazy

I loved my 05, but the buffeting thing really sucked big time...Easiest cure I found, and worked better than any shield I tried, (non worked  any better for me), was to just pull out the stock window bolts, get some new longer ones with small heads so it can pivot on them, , put some spacers under the bottom of the shield, I started with all 4 bolts and just some nuts for spacers to raise the lower part and tilt back the shield, ended up just using a  piece of wood under the bottom, and  just tightening down the top screws and this allows you to tilt the thing back any degree you want, plus you can lower it wayy down overlapping the fairing a bit.It will not move at any speed..Smile

.This  gets rid of a lot the buffetting and puts your helmet back into the clean airfow..I dont mind the breeze,I love it,  just  not turbulence thank you..Not interested in being  behind a window with no airflow myself....so this really helped mine..nearly free..Helped it, but by then I found something more fun...

But it Really IS the ugliest bike I ever owned, gaaakkk...probly the biggest reason I unloaded it...

I am looking at another for 2 upping, and  at those speeds with the tiltback, I could live with it..But I do hope they fix the next version...

good luck

I have the Givi on my DL1k and I haven't had any problems with buffeting. Others may experience differently, but it's a heck of a lot better than stock.

I saw pics of a new "Euro Sport" screen that's kinda wavy over on ADVrider. Looks pretty cool. The guy that imported one says it works. Nice clean air.

I have the WindStrom shield on mine.  No buffeting, but there's a little bit of odd wind noise (a rumble).  It took some tuning on the prior owner's part to get it right, but it was possible.

Note that my Shark helmet is the most aerodynamically neutral thing I've ever put on my head, so I may have a bit of a leg up on the wind thing...

Mine's an 02, before the electric windshields. I went with a Cee Bailey's. I think it was the 24" or 26", the tallest one they made anyway. Works great for me, but I wish I'd gotten a clear one instead of a tinted one. Around town it makes it hard to see directly down in front of the bike, which is a problem in spring when there's lots of gravel and potholes. I still use the stock screen for around town commuting so I can see the road better, and the bike does look better with the stock screen. The Cee Bailey goes on for any extended highway rides.

The Strom wind/buffeting issue is SO dependent upon rider height. Not your inseam, but the 'butt to head' height. Depends on where your head is in the windstream. Since I'm short, the Cee Baileys standard works fine on my non-adjustable '03.

Then again, I'm not expecting/looking for a 'car-like stillness' when riding.

Luckily my '06 Wee came with a Cee Bailey's windscreen; I moved it up one notch and it's practically perfect in every way.

Those with stock windscreens are also hopefully aware of the 'Super Secret 4th Position' - visit the VStrom Info Portal Forum and look for the "Level 4 Stock Screen" discussion in the 'Windshield' Tech area.
