Didn't think about it but that kid was lucky he was only about a half mile from the med school, trauma center, air ambulance and all the badass rescue folks associated with those.

The drop felt like forever.

But as the motorcycle flew off of the James Island connector and toward the Ashley River below, Ben Fischer hung onto the machine, plunging nearly the height of a nine-story building, his helmet flying off as he fell.

"It was the longest, the most ... yeah," he said shaking his head Wednesday.

The bike was a 600cc Kawasaki Ninja, a powerful, black and chrome beauty Felkel had bought a week earlier and let Fischer borrow.

 

It was Saturday. They planned a night ride, maybe downtown. It was Fischer's first time on the Kawasaki and his first time on a street bike, although he had ridden dirt bikes.
