I am going to ride a SS1000 this summer and have two routes planned.  I would like your opinions on both.

1st:  Sacramento to West Wendover Nv.
2nd: Sacramento to Eugene Or.

#1: I have ridden I80 between Sac and Cheyenne MANY times.  This route will be hot, but have virtually no traffic once out of California.  The 120 miles between Sac and Reno will be congested and in the mountains.

#2: I have not ridden.

All opinions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ray

I'm going to assume you are riding on the intersate. The route from Sacramento to Eugene will be a bit more scenic, and probably more temperate, but traffic will be thicker and the roads just a bit more twistier. The ride to Wendover, once you clear Reno isn't great, but the speeds will most likely be higher. Probably warmer temperatures, too. Sometimes I prefer the solitude of places like Northern Nevada. It's kind of a judgement call on your part. If you want to finish earlier, then head to Wendover.

Thanks.  I am VERY familiar with I-80 Between Sac and Wendover.  Never ridden north so didn't know what the highway was like.  Looks like I will be planning a run late August-early September as I have been told no more long trips until after the wedding and honeymoon.

Whenever I plot out an IBA cert ride I ask myself, is this a ride I would enjoy if it weren't for a certificate? Remember, it's about the ride, not the paper. Therefore if it were me I'd do the Eugene route. But who knows, maybe you have a big woodie for Nevada interstate. Time isn't really an issue on a SS1K. Even with lower speed limits in Oregon you won't have any time problems on an all-interstate route.

+1

I also recommend you try to include a variety of riding )slab, twisties, mountains, desert, etc. Its more fun and the miles fly by more easily if you aren't frozen on the seat like a statue  watching the odometer Smile

Why not something more like:

Sac to Salinas south on 5 to 152 (this skips the bay area), down to Ventura on 101 and then over to Lancaster on 126, and up 395 to Reno and then back to Sac on 80? In MS Streets and Maps that comes out 1070 miles.  If you head south and west in the morning you will be heading away from the rising sun and the when you turn back east at Ventura the sun will be going down behind you.

Just a thought... and the route I would do if I ever get around to it.
