Supermoto initiation

I just got back from a day of supermoto riding at one of the kart tracks. Wooohooo!

What --- a --- blast !!!

I've been prepping my 450 for supermoto riding at the kart tracks and today was the first outing. A buddy and I showed up this morning at Pat's Acres, ready to ride. All the fast guys were in McMinnville today racing and Pat's had open practice. When we arrived, we were the only ones there! We ended up having the track all to ourselves for an hour or two (time flies when you're having fun). Eventually karters started to show up and then two other supermoto riders.

Working the bike around the tight track, wheeling between corners, and generally getting a feel for the track and technique was just hilarious fun. I wasn't backing it into the corners like the fast guys yet, but worked up to the point of being able to feeling the hints of a controlled slide on some of the corners. Much diligent practice will be required...

In the afternoon, they opened the dirt section for us. Mixing it up on the dirt berms and tabletop jumps added yet another dimension of silliness and rounded out the full supermoto experience. Just way toooooo much fun...

And one of the best things is, a day of supermoto is dirt cheap compared to a day at PIR or any of the road course track days...

Seeing those pics REALLY gets an itch starting for some 17\'s for my LC4E!!  Nice pics BTW, glad you had fun!

I'm feeling the same itch. I was running Avon Distanzias on my 18/21 rims. They worked great. But I can only imagine that the 17s would sharpen the handling even more and give tons more confidence inspiring grip.

Other than changing tires, prepping the bike consisted of:
All routine, periodic maintenance done.
Peg sliders
Forks pull 10mm higher in triples
3/4 of rebound and compression dampening front and rear
Safety wiring on everything.
Coolant flushed for water + Water-Wetter
Kickstand removed
Catch can for crankcase breather, rads, and carb installed

Thus, going with the 18/21 setup meant that my only significant expenditure was tires, which can always serve dualsport (triple-sport??) purposes also.

To convert your DRZ hubs to 17's it will run you about $700-800
To buy a used set up Rougly $1200
To go brand new about $1700
