I did something similar, but in reverse. We went from St. Cloud, MN to Hayward, WI, then east on our way around Lake Superior. We found that the small towns really slow you down, and that there was a lot of construction. Decent riding, but slow. I'd use Google to route it and assume that as a worst-case scenario. Usually I cut 10-20% off that, but not in this case. Maybe 5%.

From the Soo to Duluth, i'd say 8-9 hours doing 60-65 depending on stops.  Just take the most direct route cutting across and not coming up this way toward Houghton.  Thats if your just into making time.  The scenic way, well you know.

I know Duluth to Ironwood is a good 3 hours if you take the direct route. If you take the senic route through Bayfield it's closer to 4 hours.

I'd say you could do Sault - Ashland in 6-7 hours if you pushed.
Here's a nice motel in Ashland that was $31.00 a night.

Watch your speed in Ashland, WI. The local cops like to give out tickets and the speed drops to 25 without warning.

I'll be riding along Hwy 28 to Ironwood -
309 miles so it suggests on my Michigan map here, but it will probably seem longer.  Last time I was in the U.P. (which was a week ago, coincidentally) it seemed like time started going backwards.  I'll bet it takes you longer than 6 hours.  Lol

What is the name of the hotel? It will do after one looong day of riding. I need to make Ashland the first day if I have any chance of making Billings MT in 3 days -  one bonus is I gain an hour at Ironwood.

I'm sorry - I don't remember the name of the motel. As you come into Ashland from the east this motel sits to your left after passing through what little town there is. It's easy to find.
I live an hour south of the bridge and ended my ride that day at that motel. Did most of the miles on 28 and enjoyed it. Only saw one cop (I was going maybe 15 over EEK!) and he didn't even look up.

Welllllllll.......since you brought it up.....

I was at I-696 and I-75 at noon, Mac bridge at 4:00 and pulled into my cousins driveway(between L'anse and Skanee near the silver river)
at 8:00. There had been a snow squall between Munising and Marquette and I had to slow down a little. BTW this was November 13th and i was in a cage.
Literaly a white knuckle ride!
