That's why they probably banned it.  Since they can't ban it just for warning people about speed traps (1st amendment?) they'll try and ban it altogether.

These are the kind of bullship laws that drive me insane. Do our elected officials really think we're so inept that we can't be expected to function as a community when on the road. C'mon... what's wrong with a little beep to let someone know they're sleeping through an advance green or signal when they have a brakelight out. The other day I came up behind a schoolbus going down a divided highway with the red flashers going. Driver didn't have a clue and when I pulled up beside him and honked, he had that "oh crap look what I did" and flashed me the  Thumbsup sign as he turned them off. We're all out there together on the road people, why not extend the courtesy of acting like it and using all available means to communicate.

2 different uses.

When overtaking another vehicle from behind:

In HS driver's ed they use to teach everyone to flash their lights to pass. For some reason someone decided it was "road rage". I bet it was idiot who parks in the left lane and refuses to move right when people start stacking up behind him.  They need to fine the people who fail to move right after passing. They also need to fine those who think "passing" is going 3 mph faster than those folks in the right lane.

When approaching another vehicle going to other way:

Flashing brights: a cop is x miles behind me (where x=number of times you flash).

re: "cop" vs "pig"

get a grip. "Cop" is even used by cops today to refer to themselves. But, when it originated, it was as derogatory a term as "pig" is today. Yet you see copy buying plush pigletts in cop uniforms all the time. If you expect for use to refer to them a "Officers of the Law" then it ain't gonna happen. that takes too long when trying to attach it to other phrases like "fuquin".

That is incorrect. The laws do not contridict each other.  One says that if an audioable signal is given to you, you need to move to the right.  The other one says you can't honk unless it is an emergancy.

Californians do an infinitely better job of getting out of the left lane.  Around here the first thing anyone does upon merging onto the freeway is to gradually (without a blinker) move all the way into the left lane while traveling 30 mph under the speed limit. Then stay there.  The fastest lanes here are the far right lanes since nobody is in them  Headscratch

The fastest lanes here are the far right lanes since nobody is in them  Headscratch


When driving the 30' motorhome with a 23' trailer behind me I end up driving down the right lane on 405 alot due to that is my way to the track.

You should see how many idiots never look before they get on the freeway.  Since I'm a big mofo I just keep running.....so many times that car getting on the freeway ends up in the shouldar locking up the brakes...its actually funny now.  Lol

Actually, it's better to turn your lights on/off three times to indicate trouble ahead or cop...

The WA Driver Guide (http://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/driverguide.pdf) states (on p. 56):

Use your horn - People cannot see you unless they are looking your way. Your horn can get their attention. Use it whenever it will help prevent a collision. If there is no immediate danger, a light tap on the horn should be all you
need. Give your horn a light tap:
• when a person on foot or on a bike appears to be moving into your lane of travel,
• when you are passing a driver who starts to turn into your lane,
• when a driver is not paying attention or may have trouble seeing you, and
• when coming to a place where you cannot see what is ahead, like a steep hill, a sharp curve, or exiting a narrow alley.

If there is danger, do not be afraid to sound a sharp blast on your horn. Do this:
• when a child or older person is about to walk, run, or ride into the street,
• when another vehicle is in danger of hitting you, and
• when you have lost control of your vehicle and are moving toward someone.

When not to use your horn - There are several occasions when you should not use your horn. They include:
• encouraging someone to drive faster or get out of the way,
• letting other drivers know of an error,
• greeting a friend,
• around blind pedestrians,
• passing bicyclists, and
• when approaching horses.


The Motorcycle Operator Manual (http://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/motomanual.pdf) states on p. 38:

Be ready to use your horn to get someone’s attention quickly.
It is a good idea to give a quick beep before passing anyone that may move into your lane.
Here are some situations:
• A driver in the lane next to you is driving too closely to the vehicle ahead and may want to pass.
• A parked car has someone in the driver’s seat.
• Someone is in the street, riding a bicycle or walking.

In an emergency, press the horn button loud and long. Be ready to stop or swerve away from the danger. Keep in mind that a motorcycle’s horn isn’t as loud as a car’s, therefore, use it, but don’t rely on it. Other strategies may be appropriate along with the horn.


Neither of these booklets has a word on flashing high-beams.

(1) Every motor vehicle when operated upon a highway shall be equipped with a horn in good working order and capable of emitting sound audible under normal conditions from a distance of not less than two hundred feet, but no horn or other warning device may emit an unreasonably loud or harsh sound or a whistle. The driver of a motor vehicle shall when reasonably necessary to insure safe operation give audible warning with his horn but shall not otherwise use such horn when upon a highway.


I searched RCW section 46, but could not find anything specific on the subject of flashing high beams. Some interesting stuff can be found though at http://www.wsp.wa.gov/.
