Most squiden'ist squid
«
on:
May 21, 2007, 04:43:34 AM »
Coming back from my triathlon yesterday I was driving around 695 in Md, saw a guy on what appeared to be a R1 without the bottom fairing. So as I look closer I see he's wearing a full on moto-gp suit. Complete with all the sliders and the mound on the back of the suit. Thought it was pretty funny, if I had my camera I would have written a note that said, "smile squid" and taken a picture
I may have to go buy a cheapo digital camera just so I can start taking pictures of all the funny things I see on the highway.

I don't get it. What is so funny about a guy on an R1 in full leathers? Did you expect shorts and a tshirt?

Sounds like he was a fully geared motorcyclist to me, not a squid.

Most squids aren't going to spend $600-$1500 on a full leather suit.

Hope you don't pass me going the other way on I-81, I-581. I-83, or I-283 on my way to work. You'll think I'm a squid since I wear full leathers on my commute sans knee sliders or speed hump though.

Might he have just come from a (somewhat unsuccessful) track day? Maybe you haven't heard of those, being crusty old Guzzi rider.

I don't wear full leathers just riding around town (have a set of textiles for that), but I'll wear my full leathers riding through town to get to all the good twisty bits on the other side...
He was probably just geared up going to/from wherever he was REALLY riding...
Now full leathers and a cruiser-style "German" helmet; full leathers and sneakers; full leathers and no gloves... then I could see him being a squid...

Only difference between that rider and me is the hump in the back of the leathers and the lower fairing. I'm pretty sure I'm not a squid.

I've never seen any street rider with the hump on the back of his suit. I think wearing the leather suit was smart, but if you can afford a full moto gp suit with the hump, then you should be able to afford one without the hump. The hump is what I thought made him squidish.

Now that the aero hump has become commonplace in pro racing I'm sure you'll be seeing more of it on the street.

To me, having a hump on the back of your leather suit while riding public roads is like a Honda Civic have a big Formula One type wing or a coffee can muffler. Is it going to make that much of a difference on the street?? Nope. Might look cool on the track, but it looks gay on the street. Keep the leather, lose the hump.

Is the hump for aerodynamics, or does it keep the helmet from rocking too far backwards in the event of an accident, like a neck brace? Or is it for water?

Guess what buddy. Riding on the street is more dangerous than riding on the track. The hump is definitely not going to hurt, and even if it helps just a teeny bit, then it's worth the effort as far as that guy is concerned. As far as it looking "gay on the street"...sounds like you're the poser if anyone is. How old are you? 16? Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gong to install my coffee can muffler on the Geo.
