a quick note to the viewers in the audience who aren't familiar with DMSO therapy:  be sure that your skin is freakin' crazy clean and sterile before putting DMSO on it.  Whatever's there is going straight into your bloodstream.

It's a common naturopathic thingie, but the FDA hasn't approved topical DMSO for any theraputic use that I know of.  Commonly used as a linement for horses, for degreasing engine blocks, and as a cryoprotectant when freezing cell samples.  Whether you want that stuff in your body is up to you.

+1 What Req said (more explanation & disclaimers were needed actually). I was turned onto it by a skeptical RN friend who has done a lot of research and now use it occasionally as a secret weapon for back and wrist pain. Obtained from the local feed store.

heh.  At a natural foods and health supplies store a buddy used to work at, they sold little bottles of DMSO with a roll-on applicator.  In big letters written on the label was "DO NOT APPLY TO SKIN, FOR RESEARCH ONLY" or something like that.  Hence the roll-on applicator, I guess.   Lol

It's a really good solvent, and dissolves pretty much anything.  When put on the skin, it makes a lot of things go through the skin and into the bloodstream.  This includes things that you want in your bloodstream, like any drugs that are mixed with the DMSO, and any other crap that happens to be on your skin - oils and little bacteria and whatever.  Hence the importance of cleaning well.

Apparently, hippies in the 60s would fill squirt guns with DMSO/LSD mixtures and squirt people with them.   Lol

More at wikipedia, as always.

I invented a universal solvent once, but couldn't find anything to keep it in...
