Las Vegas to Grand Canyon

I guess I should post this region 2 as well but maybe someone here will know. Next March a large group of us will be in Las Vegas for about 4 days. Unfortunately we'll be in cages once we land. We'd like to do a day trip to the Grand Canyon but no one is sure if this is possible. One in the group thinks the drive is 2 hours from Vegas to the GC but it's not near the main area where we would want to sight see. Can anyone confirm this or know how far we'd need to drive to see what's considered the area you have to see?
Thanks.

To south rim the MSN distance is 357 miles via 93-40-89-64. Many sites to view .
You also could look at the new Grand Canyon West attraction
http://www.destinationgrandcanyon.com/map.html
which is closer to Vegas but limited in vistas. Also check out the variety of day tours from Vegas. A combination helicopter- rafting tour is yummy for those pressed for time.

The route that I had for last weekend would hit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
Basically, I headed out of Vegas on 93, towards Hoover Dam. I actually did stop at the Dam, but then came back and did the loop around Lake Mead. Ended up running NV167 up until it hit I-15. Took a short run up I-15 into Utah then jumped off on UT9 for a ride through Hurricane UT, and into Zion National Park. UT9 will run into US89A, which you can take south to Kanab UT, then back into Arizona. US89A will run you right by the entrance to the North Rim. You can also run 89 all the way around and down to Flagstaff, then work your way back up to the South Rim.
I've done 89 from I-40 up to Kanab, and did the western leg from Vegas around Mead and into Zion. Zion was crazy packed with tourists last weekend, so I did not complete the loop all the way through the park, but it's still a scenic route when the tourists aren't out of control.
