I argue with myself over this all the time. I'm generally a cautious and sane-speed rider, and with I'm with my riding group, at least one of the other guys typically has a detector on. The one time I've been tagged in the last 10 years was 100% valid and I don't see how I could have avoided it considering all the line-of-sight that came into play when I was tagged.

I dunno... the gadget geek in me definitely wants one, but the rest of me... the bill-paying part... says to hold off.

Out of curiosity, how does one mount a decent detector like this one, in a way that will actually provide you with 360 deg protection? It seems like there's no way to mount it without your body blocking everything behind you.

Radar wave propagation is such that it will still detect signals "blocked" by the rider because the radar waves will ricochet off of overpasses, windshields, buildings etc and be caught by the front sensor.

Best mounting solution I have seen is the RAM mount with "Power Plate" platform.

...and in my experience, Laser is much more likely to come from in front of you.  I mounted mine off of the front brake control bolts using a RAM ball and the legal speeding setup.

I wonder how effective it would be in a tank bag.  I'm sure radar and laser will go thru cloth?  If you have it connected to a comm system or HARD system you would be able to hear it/see it.

Tank bag is fine when under clear plastic. Radar wont matter but laser will. But if you get hit with laser then good bye to a clean driving record. I have the x50 escort and use an Autocomm system to pump audio thru and works well. But if you don't have a laser scrambler mounted on you bike I think is almost useless to buy a radar detector now a days. The new 9500 has GPS capability to it and claims to eliminate false alarms. Read one of the reviews and it doesn't cancel out frequencies which can be a problem.

I've got the Escort 8500 and it save my ass and   bank account big time this weekend, twice.
The only problem is, it scares the shit out of me when it goes off for the real thing.  It has picked up Lazer once when I was in traffic, don't know if the cop was just bouncing it around the group or he was getting a bead on the guys in front of me, but I had rolled off to legal plus 10 kph pretty quick, and got a second hit, no ticky.
The new GPS function should help to sort out the false alarms from buildings etc, but beside that I think the 8500 still works great.

Oh I agree, I love my 8500 but my buddy's newer X50 model gets several seconds more warning of typical radar traps.  They seem to have improved sensitivity substantially.

FWIW, I can do that "group buy" price all day, anytime.

Last one I sent out was about $10 for shipping w/ins, so I don't see a problem with the same price. Only difference is you don't have to hurry to get into the group buy.

Yes, and I was too. I thought I posted the states that are illegal for lasar scramblers, maybe I am wrong but I don't think so. Certain types of radar scamblers are illegal in all states. Some are not. Its the difference between passive and active radar scrambling. There are a few websites on this and is interesting read. Google Radar Roy and Rocky Mountain Radar and read the sites. And yes they do make Laser scramblers.

Yes, some laser scramblers will. Those who buy it put it on the back of their vehicles. Don't believe what people tell you on the mounting of the receivers. Some websites say that 95 percent of signals come from behind. Thats not true. You need to mount both on the front and back. I don't have one but the last two tickets I have where from laser from the front.
