Top Case Suggestions for '07 Sprint

So I'm planning my first extended trip and it's pretty clear to me that I'm going to need some more "capacity" for the bike than the standard side panniers. I've looked at the triumph 3rd (top) case, but at close to $700 for the case and the mount, I just wanted to see if that was the best solution (and it still won't hold my helmet on a day trip...) . Any of the Sprint owners want to let the noob know what they're using? Any help would be welcome!

Check JCWhitney...they have a top case with universal mounting plate for $89 plus S/H. Also check Givi..should be around 5 bills for theit top case and mounting rack

I have seen the JC Whitney top case.  For $89 it really does seem like a good deal.  

However it does not hold enough for me so I went with the Givi 52.  It will hold two full face helments or two crunched up heavy leather jackets.  It does cost almost as much as the Triumpet topbox and it does not integrate quite as well with the bike.  However the big upside of the Givi is you can buy a new mounting kit for your next bike and use the same box at consideralby lower cost in the future.

S-W motech quick release Alu-rack from www.twistedthrottle.com and Givi 46 litre top case works for me, the alu-rack bolts right into the same holes the OEM one does, mounts easily and is very clean with the case and the top plate removed

Man that thing looks huge on that bike.  I've got the V46 on my ZZR1200 and at 85-95 mph the wind buffeting on the bag causes a slight wobble.  Does that happen on your Sprint ST with the same bag?

You guys and your Givi steamer trunks!  Every time I see one of those things, it reminds me of an AWACS plane.  Yes it holds a lot, but eeesh!

So far I have wind tested it to about 135 (GPS, not speedo) and it has held.  Yeah, it looks big, like an AWACS, but what do I care, it stays, and I don't have to see it.

Hmmm. The soft tail bag may well  be the way to go. I already have the tank bag (thanks to e-bay...). Any of these softies waterproof, or will they all require a rain cover? Any tips on which ones have better strap/attachment systems?

I have the Rapid Transit Recon tail bag and it works great.  I would think most would work but I would pay attention to the dimensions as the Sprint pillion is kind of small.

The built in bungees connect very well to the pannier frame and work even with the panniers on.  It comes with a rain cover.  The only difficult thing is trying to get on the bike with it on.  I think that I'm not coordinated enough.

Thanks.  I'm assuming that you put the bike on the center stand when you do this.

Nope.

Man if I could get my bike up on the centerstand when it's loaded with a full Givi, two saddlebags, camping gear and a full tankbag, I'd have thighs as big as watermelons.

They'd friggin' call me Torgo.

Oh, and just in case Chicken Little comes along and starts to tell me that I'm going to break my sidestand or something, save your breath.  I've been doing this for over 30k miles.  I'm not doing gymnastics up there, just getting over the bike and being done with it.

Be advised.  Most soft luggage is NOT waterproof.  Even with rain cover if you get caught in an all day soaker they will leak.  I would pack everything in plastic bags.

My wife and I use duffle bags from GI Joe's (with trash bags inside) and strap them down with straps from REI. A cheap solution that works like a charm. I'm hoping it'll strap to her Sprint as easily as it did to her ST3.

Besides, it's not like I (and I assume others do the same thing) leave them on all the time.  Personally, I use them for the TOURING part of the ST name of this bike.  You can't get much of anything in those panniers.  eeesh!
