I'll get to ride one this Sunday, but in the meantime I'm curious about indicated speeds and corresponding RPMs on a DL650 (Wee Strom). I thought I heard someone say they run 5100rpm at an indicated 70mph...but this seems wrong to me...

This morning while commuting to work on my KLR650, I took note of the following:

5th gear:
3900rpm = 60mph
4300rpm = 65mph
4700rpm = 70mph
5000rpm = 75mph

4th gear:
4900rpm = 60mph

Remember, this is a single-cylinder thumper we're talking about! And those numbers above are accurate---I double- and triple-checked them---on level, downhill, and uphill grades.

So if a Wee runs 5100rpms at 70mph, then it sounds like the lowly KLR is more more relaxed with a taller 5th gear!

Scott

PS - I'm not an mechanic or engineer and don't understand the relationships between singles, v-twins, gearing, etc...so I suppose it's possible a DL650 might run higher RPMs at all speeds/gears, yet feel more relaxed and smooth than the KLR.

My Wee spins 6K RPM at an indicated 80 MPH in 6th. Roughly 70 at 6K in 5th and 60 at 6K in 4th. The Wee is VERY happy and smooth at 6K RPM. It's definitely the "sweet spot" for the motor IMO. Redline is at ~10K, but I rarely exceed 8K. Tuned for midrange and all that.

Yep, 5100 at 70 and 6K at 80. Also, I could be running redline on a 90 degree v-twin and it would still be way smooth than a big thumper.
