Best quote:
Mr Sunshine's "You mean your GPS auto-downloaded a new road for us?"
Best quote, runner up:
Atypical1's "We're not smart, and you can't make us."
Best moment:
Triple Digit Sightseeing. In the rain. In the dark of night. On a back road. In deer country. With four other idiots.
Best moment, runner up:
The old hunter telling us "That road goes nowhere" and then us setting out to prove him wrong. He was right, though. That road went through 30 or so miles of nowhere.
Best food:
White Chili at Reilly's in La Porte. So good we went several hours out of our way the next day to get some more.
Best food, runner up:
The two monster hot dogs that almost did Mr Sunshine in at the retro diner.
Best road:
Quincy-La Porte Road, between quincy and (you guessed it) La Porte.
Best road, runner up:
Anything paved after riding on slippery red clay, in the rain.
I'm forgetting plenty, but that's a start. Please add to the list.

I would like to nominate the runner up to the runner up of the best moment.
Me: "How far is it?"
Miles: "Its about 3 miles"
Me: "Fuck it"
I then turn around and head up the rocky (too big to be gravel) and clay steep as hill with a nasty sideways slope in the rain on a street bike with street tires.

I had the "headin' for the barn" instinct going on, on the way home, so no time for pics, but this moment had me smiling.
While crossing back into Nevada, the huge LED traffic sign read "Helmets Required
; Lane Splitting Illegal
"
Watching all the "Street Mutations" riders heading for home in the rain (with most wearing half-shell helmets), I thought how much I really like my Schuberth C-2 (it's a bit on the hot side in the summer time, but toasty warm on cold rainy dayz).

Oh yeah, the bike is fine. I think that some dirt riding is actually good for it.
Funny sight having 4 non-adventure touring bikes on gravel, dirt, and clay roads though. We should have done one of those "adventure bike shoot outs"

Just a few of the priceless pictures....
And then the road turned on us...
And the question of the day: How well DO Pilot Powers stick in the mud!
Calendar photo anyone?
We laughed until we cried.
And wept for joy in the roads we found.
Can he DO IT!?!
And ultimately the satisfaction of a great ride with freinds.

I would have paid money to hear you tell that officer that. You know, we had two chances to make that line work and we blew it both times!

I don't think there's anything better than the anticipation leading up to a big motorcycle trip.
I set out for Baker City, OR to hook up with MisterSmooth, greench440, ejh, Moxie, BigBlock and Mr. Sunshine.
Since I had not had a chance to get there this year I rode through one of my favorite places on earth:
Hell's Canyon - dark, moody and still a bit smokey
little did I know this was just an appetizer for the entire weekend
arriving in Baker City, OR
day 2, and we are out in the Oregon desert, I think this is Lake Abert
some local wildlife
greench440 scoping the route...or something
preparing for departure once again, I think this is about halfway to Chester
day 3, a covered bridge outside Oroville, CA
from the other side
I wasn't quite ready for a action shot but this dude appears out of nowhere doing stunts
day 4, heading home, it's cold and there's snow in the mountains over Susanville, CA
headed for home
It was a great trip!

+1 on that. I so enjoy drooling over the maps looking for the most twisty and potentially adverse roads and setting lofty mileage goals. The anticipation of being out on the open road is so exciting.

Ok, so here we go. Remember, when I'm behind the camera expectations are low.
Chili, Greench440, ejh, me, and Mr Sunshine were well met in Walla Walla, but by the time we got to Lewiston we'd been riding straight roads for so long we attacked the Spiral Highway like Picts storming a castle stocked with barrels of scotch whiskey.
Obligatory Spiral Highway shot.
Funny how after just a few hours together our true personalities began to emerge. Erik pulled out a camera with a lens the size of a grain silo...
Lewis and Clark must have been damn surprised when they were coming across the US and came across these two cities with names so similar to their own.
Chris, usually shy and reserved, started coming out of his shell.
Ladies and Gentlemen, after you've ridden the Spiral Highway, this is the man you need to raise that post-ride pint to. No, no, God no, not me. C.C. Van Arsdol.
Which rider here has fallen victim to the classic "poison ivy in the helmet" gag?
Here's Sunshine, XLR8, moxie, Smoothie, Greench, and ejh. Don't wear reflective gear indoors, kids.
Breakfast shot! Eggs, fresh scones
still warm from the oven
, condiments, and a cup of warm used motor oil.
That new 'stich of Ron's is still a little tight in spots.
Who's got the bigger lens...Ron or Erik? If they didn't take such damn good photos it would be easier to make fun of their huge cameras. I'll let Ron write the caption for this one.
I'm concerned about Chili. He's been hitting the booze pretty hard and now he's traveling in some sort of bondage apparatus and carrying a big stick.
One obligatory "Tuono on the road" shot. I'm enjoying the hell out of that silly bike.
It's surprisingly competent as a tourer.
The zombie bikes invade Chester. They're staying at the Rose Quartz Inn.
We had a great rip down Highway 70. Other people took actual photos of it, but I waited until we found the world's smallest covered bridge.
Was it wise of Kent to put his tank bag on the windowsill?
The covered bridge was a regular motorcycle conduit. While we hung, this airhead stunta guy showed up--only the X-man got the shot, though.
And this classic Duc.
I hope that Jim's girlfriend doesn't see him looking at his bike like this.
Every time I started talking Erik did this. No surprise to you all, of course.
Erik at the Sundial Bridge in Redding. The stunned look? Well, you should have seen the women from the
front
.
I end with this, perhaps the most amazing thing that I saw in five days: The sport-touring 996S. Here are aTypical1 and VifferVern fascinated by the details and mildly agog at the concept. Late Saturday night this guy roars up with the thunder of Termignonis and the rattle of a dry clutch, sopping in his perforated leathers, with his gear neatly stowed in the bag on that Ventura rack.
So the next day, I've gotta go say hi. Turns out he's about 60 (!). Every year he visits his cousin in San Francisco, where he stores the bike, goes for a track day with his cuz and then hits the road for a little tour.
Tour on a 996? There went a man, my friends, a man as hard as a granite anvil.

Just a few of the priceless pictures....
And then the road turned on us...
Yikes, that shit looks slippery as snot. Hey, I'll admit it, mud scares the crap out of me. My a-hole clinches just looking at the pic. Kudos to ya'll sprot-bikers that made it through that unscathed. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm thinking whoever it was in the viffer was already calculating cracked fairing replacement prices as you scooted down that ice-rink of a road.

Yes, sir, it was as slippery as snot. Steep, too, and as a bonus, off-camber big-time. A true joy to ride.
Or, in some people's case, lay your bike down on repeatedly.

Hmmm, Miles???...my limited memory says you're the the Triumph dude and I believe I've ridden with you before. Also, I thought you moved back east or something, but this is all off the top of my head....I'll just let it fly unchecked by searches and see how far off base I am.
Anyways, I just knew ya'll were holding back on the 'had to lay 'er down' pics'. Come on people fess up. There's no shame. Fook, if I got a look of that road on my C-14 bagger I would have just turned around and went back the way I came. That shit is just a recipe for crashing. On the V-strom I would have gone for it and not been happy. At least I have crash-bars on the 'Strom...

You are correct!
Surprisingly the VFR did pretty well in the mud. My throttle response at 5 mph is very controlable. I just slogged along and NEVER touched the front brake. When we turned around things did get a little more sketchy though. We were coming down a pretty steep grade and I had to feather the clutch to keep the ass end from sliding out from behind me.
I was thinking all sorts of things like, "I can't believe I'm doing this again" (did this last year on our Monterrey ride), and "this is crazy but oh so fun", and "don't drop the bike, don't drop the bike".

Looks like too much fun. Here's to making WCRM 5.
The roads look spectacular. Quite a chance meeting of the Oilhead Stunta and a frakin' 750 Duc under the same covered bridge! Odd bike vortex of some kind.
Thanks for sharing the photos, guys.

Repeatedly is kinda an overstatement isn't it??? Friggin' wise guy.
Twice to be exact. The Duc does not like slow precise stuff in the cold at altitude. Add some power pulses to that mix and you get a wild ride. Thank god for naked bikes! Muddy but not damaged is OK in my book. Funny thing is that it fell on the right side both times with an open clutch and the mud never got up there. It's a miracle I tell ya!

It's always a rush when you flirt with disaster and win. As far as an ass kicking goes I would have no one to blame but myself as I was very willing co-conspirator on this little venture.
Actually, riding is this sticky stuff really increases the confidence level on dirt in general. Later, as we were on the hard pack (wet) gravel roads I was roosting it up and found speeds of up to 35-40 seemingly comfortable.

The guy with the Duc 996S is one grizzled looking dude. I want to be like that when I grow up.
I still laugh at the fact that after the ride, we were cold, wet, and hungry, but still stood in the falling rain talking riding and bikes for over an hour. We must be a bit off.
This shot cracks me up... gotta be a good caption for that one:

I completely forgot about this.... Shit!
Now I'm totally freaked out!!!
eh, not really. Turns out it wasn't a big deal after all. Yes the VFR does have linked brakes but it's not like I touched the rear pedal and the front end locked up. I didn't really need braking on the way up and I was able to control the descent by feathering the clutch in first gear.

Met him in Fortuna a couple of years ago. Lives in Hawaii and keeps a Ducati and whatever else in storage in the Bay Area so he has something to ride when he makes his annual visit to the mainland. Could it be one and the same? He doesn't post much here, but in person he's a very friendly man.
I do know he appears in various photo libraries of the past few WCRMs. Maybe Dr. Gil has a foto. I know he knows who knobnose is.

After putting in an honest day’s work watching the clock, Chili and I were ready to ride. Mrs Greench440 had completed his custom made ChiliStitch and it was time to send him on his way south for the winter.
When you travel with these guys, there’s not much time for flower sniffing or picture taking. The next day we stopped for lunch in Joseph OR. Have lunch at the Embers if you’re in town.
Chili sampled a locally made Porter.
Much later that day, we had planned to ride over Elkhorn summit (the second highest paved road in Oregon) via FR51. Just remember, if you think you are leading, turn around to check if everyone is following. Mr Sunshine blew past the turn off to FR51. Here’s what the turn looks like. I stopped and waited for the group to return but eventually gave chase. 19 miles later, Mr Smooth figured it out and turned around.
We went the 19 miles back to the turn off, waited a few minutes then off to Elkhorn summit.
The view felt like we were on top of Oregon. A camera can’t do it justice.
After an overnight in Baker City with the requsite trip to Barley Brown’s Brewpub, we headed for a 500 mile ride to Chester. After putting the triple digit in triple digit sightseeing across south eastern Oregon, we descended on the Rose Quartz Inn.
BigBlock, Mr Smooth and ejh commenced to the daily spit polish routing while I sampled some Johnny Black.
I had thoroughly toasted my tires on the way down. BigBlock joined me at the CycleGear in Redding for a fresh set. I found out I wasn’t the only anal retentive mechanic. Cyclegear loaned us some stands, tools and had us back on the road in about 90 min. Thank god it wasn’t the usual 90+ degrees in Redding.
We returned to Chester via CA44 then CA89 through Lassen Park. The fog was so thick at times you could barely manage 10 mph. I did stop for the obligatgory summit pic.
Not much to see in Chester so fast forward to the return trip. I stop more when travelling solo. I stopped at historic markers etc and found this interesting rock formation.
There’s not much to see in south central Oregon but not much traffic either.
I’m making it a personal mission to eat in every brewpub in the west. Here I am at the Deschutes brewhouse in downtown Bend. Mmm, baked spicy mac & cheeze.
I was headed for Hood River and made it a point to ride the historic highway between The Dalles and Mosier. Here’s a lesser known view of the Rowena curves from the bottom
The sun was starting to set on the Columbia River Gorge. Tomorrow I would ride the road up the side of the Klickitat River. You can see the sandbars where it empties into the Mighty Columbia.
Here’s the more well known view of the Rowena curves. This is from the top of the round formation in the previous pic.
Continuing my brewhouse mission with dinner at the Full Sail brewhouse in Hood River.
The final leg home took me up SR 142 along the Klickitat.
I know I’m nearing home when I see Mt Rainer. Whether you arrive by plane, ferry, motorcycle or car, the mountain dominates the Puget Sound skyline.
A great ride with good friends, thanks for the memories. See you on the road.

Great pics, Dave!
I especially like the shot of what looks like Alkali Lake in southern Oregon. It's sere but beautiful out there.
See you sometime soon...

Ok, I'm a little slow with pics. I honestly don't know how y'all take so many pics while riding. Here's my few from the weekend. Coming down 70 on Sunday I did manage to pull over and take a couple pictures, and get going before the people I passed had caught up.
Heading North from the bayarea I thought I'd take some of the squiggly lines over the delta. Following the path I'd picked I wound up on a road that ended at the water.
There seem to be 2 ferries left that service the delta
http://deltacalifornia.com/Delta_ferrys.htm
.
On Saturday, we did take some pleasant goat trails to the covered bridge.
Nothing like a winding goat trail in the rain.
On the way out on Sunday I took 70, and stopped for a few shots.

Love those last three shots.
Too bad you can't experience the rain-stung eyes and foggy visor effect from a photo! Guess I'll just have to do it again.

Great pics everybody.
Also thanks greench440 for getting me over to CycleGear for those new tires and helping with that stubborn front axle.
I still owe you a glass of the finest!!
Can't forget Zen Rider either

Yes, Zen Rider do make good ballast.
What you can't see is that the FJR front wheel is missing. Thanks to ZR for keeping the front off the ground while the CycleGear guys swapped tires.

Here are a few more Chester pictures:
Getting ready to ride in the rain.
A break in the action on 70.
The ever popular covered bridge.
Our leader for the day plotting a course out of the covered bridge.
Finally a break in the rain on Bucks Lake Highway.
A couple of pictures on Highway 70 on my ride home.
Some pictures from my recon ride to Chester the week before at the train museum in Portola. If you like trains it's worth the ride over.
It was great meeting and riding with everyone, however I have to say I'm still trying to put the right screen names and real names on the right faces.

Glad you guys had a great trip. All those smiling faces says it all.
Somehow I thought Oregon was all redwood forests. I never imagined it to have barren landscapes.
Great pics. Great stories. Thanks for sharing guys.

ejh when we were coming back into Chester you were off on the side taking a picture of a water tower thingy next to a lake. There were low clouds over the lake and maybe even fog. I'm dying to know how that one turned out?
computer problems on many sides are keeping the pics on a memory stick for now...
