MARYVILLE — A Maryland man died Monday night in a motorcycle wreck on the stretch of U.S. Highway 129 known as “the Dragon.”

Jarrett Andrew Proctor, 21, of Brandywine, Md., lost control of his 2008 Suzuki Hayabusa around 8:50 p.m. after taking a curve at high speed, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

He locked the rear brake and skidded about 230 feet before running off the right side of the road and into a tree, Trooper John Pedigo wrote in a report.

Proctor wore a helmet, but that didn’t save him.

The motorcycle and its driver’s body rolled more than 25 feet down an embankment, where authorities found them, Pedigo wrote.

More details as they develop online and in Wednesday’s News Sentinel.

 Sad

Headscratch At 8:50 pm it would have been fairly dark.  Headscratch

Sara,

What a shame...  High horsepower, low experience most likely, out-running his lights on a road he doesn't know. All that way from home, tomorrow would have been another day to see the Dragon in the daylight.

I feel for his family.

I hope someone learns from his (lack of) experience.

What a collusion of stupid factors... 21 years old, 1300cc sportbike, unfamiliar and highly technical roads, and out riding after dark.

He COULD have been an experienced rider, but that remains to be reported. Don't assume that just yet.

Either way, sad story.

He skidded the rear tire for 230 ft w/o high siding...  that's gotta give him some 'cred'.

the really sad thing - a week from now, there will be lots of 21 year olds on sportbikes , probably out riding their skill set. doing same thing. public road , shouldn't be doing this anyway.

OK , I' m kinda guilty - first time I was at the Gap , I rode faster than I ever have, in % terms. still kept under control , never crossed centerline. slower the 2 nd day.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was up today and started talking to a guy that was on a brand new white/silver GSXR and he informed me it was his cousin that had died and he was riding with him when it happened. He was with numerous members of his family, including his dad,who also rode a Busa, and some friends on their first trip to the dragon. He pointed out the kids dad who was sitting in the bed of a pick up by himself in an obvious state of shock. He was sitting there all alone and i felt compelled to walk over and talk to him and offer my condolences. We ended up talking for 15-20 minutes about his son who he said was his best friend and that they had done evrything together since he was born.Took karate together,4 wheeled, camped etc; He had just gotten the Busa in January for his brthday and was having the time of his life and then he said, just like that, he is gone.He died in his dads arms.We were both sitting there with tears streaming down our faces and i hugged him and went home. That was the longest ride of my life. For those wondering why they are still here,as i was,he said there was paperwork that had to be processed to take a body over state lines.Sad Sad

A follow up post...

I dont know what motivated me to talk to the man except i kept looking at him and i have a 20 year old son that i have gotten into bikes and i kept picturing myself in his shoes and it was unbearable. After our talk and hug,he thanked me for my kindness and for talking with him about his son.I rode all the way home with tears in my eyes and had to go so slow because i just couldnt concentrate on anything but what had just transpired. When there is no connection to the deceased it is easy to say they were in over their head,or they were on to much bike,or they shouldnt have been there in the first place. After this,i will NEVER,question the reasons of why.Im sure that has been looped in his brain every since Monday night.I told him as much in our conversation.I told him not to let it beat him down trying to figure what happened and rationalizing if they hadnt done that last pass.Instead, honor his memory with positive thoughts about the good times and go on with life knowing he is in a better place.Smile when you think about him instead of getting depressed.I am one of the wosrt at brushing off death as part of the game but i found out yesterday that i have emotions and for some odd reason i connected with this guy and shared it with him.

Nearly a football field of rear break...yeah, I think we was going pretty fast, because I'm assuming he was probably using the front as well.

21 yo on a 2008 Busa with no self control = death.  That's what we have here.  Feel for his family. Sad

Wow I cant imagine riding a road like that in the dark. I have been up and down Palomar a few times and to do it in the dark at the posted speed limit would be more intersting that I would like it to be. Sad for this kid and his family.  Sad

I'm not sure there is a straight stretch of road that's 230' long on the Dragon.  Headscratch
I'm thinking that might be a wee bit of an embelishment.

When you count some of the minor curves where trafficless you could go straight, yeah there's 230 foot of road to leave your skid on, easily.
