General News
2010 models:  CBR600RR vs. ZX-6R vs. GSXR600 vs. YZF-R6.  This is stage 1 of the shootout.  Stage 2 will follow later.

Our annual Supersport Shootout is one of the most fiercely contested of the year, manufacturers jockeying for top honors in the cut throat middleweight market. But only for a minute, as we came up with the idea for a totally new concept: the 2010 Modified Supersport Shootout.

xx 2011 Kawasaki ZX-10R Preview [motorcycle.com] | 14 Jul 10

Kawasaki
It looks like more and more info on the new liter sized Ninja is building up to its 2011 launch.

First off, let’s dispel two wild rumors. The new 10R has neither a big-bang firing order nor a horizontal placement of its cylinders, despite fanciful speculation in lesser publications. Rumors of variable valve timing are also likely unfounded. Instead, we find an evolutionary literbike design of a traditional inline-Four engine wrapped in a perimeter-beam aluminum frame.

Yamaha
Sorry U.S., you have to live vicariously through our brethren to the north.

With an engine based on the FZ-1's, which is in turn based on the R1's, the 779 cc FZ8 shares bits with the last-generation supersport. The crankshaft is the pre-crossplane unit from the ’08 R1, while the connecting rods are shared with the current R1. The compression ratio is 12:1, and each cylinder inhales and exhausts through four valves, unlike the FZ-1, which has five.

Yamaha estimates horsepower at 110 while the torque claim is 61 lb-ft at 8,000 rpm. A torque peak at 8,000 rpm immediately tells you that this is not a slow turning twin, but the number is a trifle

xx Ten Best Bikes of 2010 [Cycle World] | 13 Jul 10

General News
Cycle World is rolling out their Top 10 of 2010 this week, adding 2 bikes per day until the list is finished this Friday.

First bike on the list...Best Standard: Kawasaki Z1000

If at first you don't succeed, try and try yet again. The third time's been a charm for Kawasaki's venerable Z1000. It nabbed an honorable mention when it debuted back in 2003 but got edged out by the glamorous Aprilia Tuono. Updates to the Z1000 in '07 kept one of our favorite versatile sporting motorcycles in the conversation, but it was the Triumph Tiger 1050 that had us by the tail that year....
