New DR650 shakedown ride report | 17 Jun 11 |
00:20:52 by GRN | Views: 15716 | Comments: 29
For those who don't want the nitty gritty, a link to the pix is at the bottom... After 30 years of riding, the last 20 or so primarily on liter+ ST bikes (ST1100, ST1300, Sprint 1050), a move to the PNW threw gas on the long smoldering ADV/Enduro fire for me. After about a year of researching different options (and waiting to see what Triumph brought to market), and their subsequent depth of accompanying third party options, the DR650 platform survived the attrition of an ever shrinking list. The idea I had in mind was to start with a platform that I could modify to do just about everything from some moderate trail time with ...

Five Guys Go Riding in Oregon; One License is Lost | 16 Jun 11 |

Rural Oregon. Open, Empty, Littered with Snowcapped MountainsIt all started with the MotoGP. Last year, XLR8 (Ron), Major 662 (Ken), Flips21 (Flip) and I decided to make the pilgrimage to Monterey for the races in July. However, we needed a warmup trip. Just to make sure that the bikes were OK, check out our gear. As I explained to my wife, it was a safety thing. Don’t want to take off on a long trip wondering if that new pair of gloves might chafe. You wouldn’t run a marathon without walking around the block first, right? As Ron and Ken live in Boise, Idaho, I live in Seattle, and Flip lives in Santa Rosa, Cali ...

Aye Laddie; Western Scotland & Northern Ireland | 29 May 11 |

A plan was hatched to do Scotland properly. I had been once before in 2003 when the Guzzi was in a friend's barn in Shropshire. At that time, I only had a week and had only made it as far as the Isle of Skye before time ran out and I had to turn around and head south. Still, what I had seen was enough to whet my appetite for more. A P.M. was fired off to notarian, our ST.N Ambassador in Scotland, asking for a few route tips. Instead, he went far above the call of duty and provided Google maps and plenty of suggestions on where to stay. He even went as far as to arrange an oil change in Aberdeen for my Thruxton. I hafta doff my chapeau to him. I owe him t ...

Rode the new BMW K1600 GTL today. My thoughts follow... | 26 May 11 |

Our local BMW dealer just got in a K1600 GTL demo bike. Apparently BMW is sending demo bikes before the ones that customers have ordered. I was able to spend good time in the saddle and as a result I was able to form some immediate opinions and was able to sit and think about others. This machine holds true to the German methodology of engineering...'If you don't need a gadget, we will design one for you anyway!' Upon the initial viewing, it has a very 'K1200LT' look to it. I like BMW styling, so I found it to my liking. Color scheme and overall design is unmistakable in that aspect. Upon sitting o ...

Two Up to Appalachia (Tiger800) | 16 May 11 |

For some time now I have wanted to share my love of two wheel exploration with my better half. Last year our calendars aligned and we did a 1000mile 4 day weekend in the UP on my StreetTriple. Well that worked, she made my buy a new tiger :clap. Next on the list was to take her to Appalachia. We would find some great twisty-curvies, ride goat trails complete with goats, and most importantly convince her that I'm only moderately insane and two wheel exploration is a blast! Hello new toy! (The Dad got one as well) An overview of our 2200 mile path. We would hit Michigan (Home), Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia ...

Moto Guzzi Stelvio 2011 review [ashonbikes.com] | 25 Apr 11 |
08:49:15 by UFO | Views: 11054 | Comments: 27
Moto Guzzis so often are nearly there... but not quite. They’ll have the spec, the looks, the power, plenty of goodwill towards this 90 year old company, then some irritating flaw will break the deal.
The new Stelvio though finally shakes off this unhappy tradition. It’s pitched as the Stelvio always has been, directly at BMW’s R1200GS, and this time, if you go for the Guzzi instead of the default German bike, you don’t have to suffer for your eccentricity. In short, Moto Guzzi has done it, the Stelvio is a match, and for many riders even, it’s a better choice.
There are two Stelvio models, the 8V and the NTX, aligne ...
