I got a haircut today at a new place because I was unhappy with the guy who'd been cutting it.

So, I'm telling the woman what I want, plus I threw my jacket in the next chair and when she finishes she says that oughta not give you any trouble with the helmet.  (very short)

My haircuts have taken into account riding for years.  I've buzzed it a few times even.

So, what about other ST.N members?  Does your coif reflect your passion?

Yep, the cut is because of the bike.

Used to have pretty long hair, more moppish than anything.  Helmet hair pretty much did away with that, so now it's all buzzed and stuff.

Hair?  Wazzat?  Headscratch

That stuff you used to find in the drain after a shower.

I've got that whole 40-something expanding forehead, thinning top thing going on and no matter what I do, I always have helmet head. People at work even comment on it when my hair doesn't look like crap. "Didn't ride the bike today Garry? You don't look like a mad scientist today!"

I spend $30 on some clippers about 13 years ago. I cut my own hair every month or two, I keep it about an inch on top, and close on the sides....and don't have to pay someone $18 to do it for me. And it still looks messy after taking off the helmet!

Hmmm... I've had a high and tight haircut since I first joined the Army in 1990.  I got out in '99, and still have the high and tight... I've tried to grow my hair out a couple of times, and I hate it.  Nothing beats being able to comb your hair with a washcloth.

Oh and yeah, my wife has been cutting my hair for me since '92.  I used to be required to have a fresh haircut every week, and that adds up.  My wife cuts my hair about every 3 - 4 weeks now.  I've probably gone through 4 pairs of clippers over the years...

I had long hair for a couple of years. Rita complained because when she vacuumed the floor, she'd get the hairs on the carpet wrapped around the roller. Finally I got it cut with a #5 and lately Rita's been doing it.

The worst part though is my eyebrows. If I don't trim them back, they grease up the sunglasses. So Rita trims them too.

Since I started riding to work, my hair is now much shorter. I just have to scrunch it off of my scalp a little. I'm not opposed to helmet hair in general but I probably shouldn't wear my helmet hair at work. Short hair solved the problem. I still keep a ball cap in my tank bag for my weekend adventures. Old habits you know... Cool

I have never had long hair but I did have someone when I lived in OKC who did my hair well even for being somewhat short. When I moved to Austin I couldn't find anyone that I liked and combined with the heat/humidity down here and wet head after 5 minutes (perspiration is not a problem for me) I finally bought some clippers. So now about every 3 weeks I buzz my head.

#3 on top and a #2 on the sides, so yes it does. I also wear a hat more often now,

Man, I've learned two things from ST-N this week:

1. You guys are old!
2. You guys are cheap!

 Lol

I use to cut my own hair all the time and would cut other people's hair while in college for pocket money. However, as I've gotten older cutting my own hair has become a pain. I have a friend who cuts hair so she usually cuts it for me now for free. Yeah, I'm cheap too.  Lol

However, usually in the summertime I shave my head bald. However, I didn't do it this summer for some reason.

I try to get a cut that can be made to look decent after wearing a helmet. My hair cuts are generally self inflicted. Lately I have been letting it grow out a bit because I find myself caring less about my appearance than I used to. More accuratly my hair is far from being my biggest problem.  Lol

I had the full-on metalhead mullet goin' on back in the '80s. In the '90s I grew it out all one length. It was about halfway down my back when I cut it all off in '99 shortly after I started riding. The longest it gets now is about 2" when I get too lazy to buzz it off in the winter. Yeah I'm one of those cheap DIY'rs.

Don't miss it at all. It's all there still other than the hairline moving back a bit, but the grey is increasing rapidly.

Cheap? Well maybe, but handing over $18 every 2-3 weeks to a pro sound to me like a perfect source of a partial tire budget.   Cool  #2 on top and #1 on the sides with the wife's help.  If I could find somebody to do it for free though, I'm sure she would happily give it up.

So for you guys that shave your heads - how much upkeep does that take?  Every day?  Every other day?

Self, 3/16” all over, ever since I reentered many (many) yrs ago. The little woman cuts the back (and must cut it straight, or she loses the job!!  Smile). It was called a helmet cut (O why was that ?!), and way before it was cool. Inspired by real riders of practical means.

When I’m in a rare less crotchety mood, I’ll tease the young set I run into at stops out on the road by asking if they know where that hairdo (or shaved) they’re wearing came from, then I’ll whip off the lid and point to my head and then the helmet.

Worrisome thing is, most of ‘em don’t get it (style is everything)… and these are the people who are going to be paying in to make my SS pmts… Lol

#4 on the top #2 on the sides and back - but I pay someone a whopping $10 to do it every 4-6 weeks.

With the heat and humidity here in Houston and with stuffing my head in a motorcycle and bicycle helmet nearly every day it's just lot neater and easier - and I don't have to carry a heavy comb.

So for you guys that shave your heads - how much upkeep does that take?  Every day?  Every other day?

I think it's simple. You can do it every day or every other - it all depends upon your mood or how fast your hair grows.  Me, I would do mine pretty much every day through the work week (just do it while you're in the shower - it's fast and easy, you can usually feel for missed spots or check once you get out). I might skip a day on the weekend but I discovered that it's easier on the scalp to do it everyday. Oh, and razor choice is huge!

As my helmet liner wears out and gets thinner, I let my hair grow out to make up the difference. Lol

Haircut?  What's that?

after my time as a uniformed minion of the federales (hgih and tight {why does that sound like a punchline to an off-color joke?}), I immediately went into a ZZ Top phase (well, it took a couple-three months) -- stayed that way for a long while --

at this point, my co-workers cheer the first appearance of helmet hair, as it indicates a much easier-to-live-with guy at work

My only consession to riding is that I'll wear two cloth rubber band thingies.  One to form the pony tail and another near the end to prevent tangling.  Works fine and it really is a low maintenance hair style.  My wife cuts a few inches off the ends for me about twice per year.

Now that I am older my hair is falling out fast enough that I guess it is not worth it to get it cut.

Gillette razor and some Edge Gel with Aloe, plus a little oil to buff it out afterwards to a nice shine.  No such thing as helmet hair, though I DO still get lines in my skull from my skull cap.

The Headblade is the best thing for those of us wishing for a more streamlined profile.  Way easier to use than a regular blade with a handle and it takes Gillette Track II refills.  I don't worry about gel or shaving cream, just shave in the shower with some soap or shampoo.

Last October after I started riding I cut it to 2" above my shoulders, which is super short for me.  (In high school and college, it went all the way down my back.)   The goal was to have it fit right under the helmet.  I've let it grow since then, since I'm really lazy about haircuts, and do the single braid down my back, like Kenga.

My hair a little shorter than Keith Partridge but looks pretty lame when I take off the helmet. Usually some water will get it back to "cool" or I can always use the ole bandana.
The biggest pain is getting it all under the helmet and not in front of my eyes while riding. I always have a few stragglers tickling my face.

I didn't have any problem with it being long. When I did more camping though, I found it easier to maintain when it's shorter. I think I cut it short just over a year ago. Before that I'd cut it when it took three rubber bands to keep it intact and send the 12" or so of it off to "Locks of Love". I did that three times before getting it really short.

Some of you guys with longer hair really out to try a buzz cut.  Its a really awesome feeling when you've grown it out long enough to be annoying and hot, then you buzz it all off and the wind blows through. Ahhh!  Remember when Pedro buzzed his hair in Napoleon Dynamite?  That's exactly the reason for a buzz cut in the summer!

I'd buzz mine even shorter but then I'd look like Ewan McGregor in Trainspotting

(although I have the face of Tobey Maguire  crossed with Jeffrey Dahmer    Embarassment ).

I wish I could get up the nerve to cut mine really short. I'm almost there, but still hesitant.

If I could control the helmet hair factor I think I'd commute to work. But the instant sweat (hello, Houston) and helmet hair have held me off.

When I worked in the radio and TV, my contract had language in it that prevented me from getting my hair "buzzed."  (I had a lot of hair at that time, see avatar photo.)  Now that I no longer work fulltime in the media, I cut it myself without a guard on the clippers.

FYI: With all the crap I used in my hair, I had "helmet-head" 24/7 and I didn't need to wear no stinkin' helmet when I rode.

That's what I do.  Right on the money about the awkward 'transitional dork phase' though.  Add a beard for winter and it works out aight.

Well, I kind of pull the "hippy artist" meets "hillbilly redneck" look.  Long hair, but above my shoulders.  Wearing my helmet for a nice ride typically results in smoother, better looking hair for me.   Headscratch   Typically, once every 1.5 years I get a haircut to a medium length 'conventional' haircut. (Though I do get trims to keep things under control every other month or so.)  I would love the freedom of the buzz cut or shaved head, but when short, my face looks rather odd it seems.  That coupled with my numerous 'cow-licks' results in better looking medium to long hair for me.

I usually get mine cut every 3 to 4 months as is.  I get it just long enough to pull back in a ponytail, but then it gets quickly out of control so it couldn't be too much worse.

Maybe in a year or so you can have some company on the forum.   I took her for a ride on the bandit last night and she was all smiles for the remainder of the evening.  Once she's settled in the new job i'm going to suggest she take the msf beginner course and get her own ride.   i'm not a huge fan of having someone on the pilon.

Just say no to flat tops. Smile

My boyfriend doesn't use any clipper guards.  I would recommend it Bigsmile

And if you use one of those nasty walmart hair cut kits, look into a pro clipper with replaceable blades.  It makes a HUGE difference, and you can get the blades sharpened for $10 I think at most beauty supply places.  I need to buy one for the boyfriend and reform him.

Sorry it took so much to bring you out of the 80s/early 90s.  Think of it as a silver lining.

And I am serious about the pro clippers.  They are essentially the same as the pro clippers groomers use, and I can guarantee you that what's left on your head is NOTHING compared to how much they cut off of a horse, and the blades are still sharp and ready to go.

They got variable speed, length, and all that shiznit too!

Yup, I would agree that the pro clippers are the best.  Getting the blades sharpened is enough of an incentive.  Much cheaper than replacing the clipper.  Nothing better for man-scaping

Yup, I would agree that the pro clippers are the best.  Getting the blades sharpened is enough of an incentive.  Much cheaper than replacing the clipper.  Nothing better for man-scaping

Yup, andis and oster were the names to look for a few years ago when I worked for the vet.

We'd put a #40 blade on it to prep for surgery, several animals a day, abuse the crap out of it (blades last much longer if you wash first, dirt dulls them quick) and the clipper lasted for years and years.  Had the blade sharpened/replaced maybe once a month.

I just have to figure out what the human equivalent is, because the boyfriend might be slightly offended if I bought him one from KV vet supply.  Lol

I'm female.  My hair is a couple of inches below the shoulder, but I'm thinking of getting it cut short.  Maybe like this.

Only I'm too lazy to keep on going back for highlights, so I'd have to pass on those.

Ooh. I like that. I'm also really lazy about haircuts though and would have to somehow make sure I kept it trimmed. The highlights are cool but $$$$ with how often you have to have them done on short hair.

Yup, too cheap to want to mess with highlights.  Maybe I'll do the emo kid thing and temporary color with koolaid.  Razz

Okay, looks like the clipper I abused was the legendary Oster 76.  $110 shipped off of ebay.

Oster also makes the fast feed for $55 shipped. Smaller version of the 76.

Heh,

I used to have a ponytail.  One day while changing oil under the truck, it got caught in bracing.  My hands were oily and I was stuck for awhile.  It pissed me off so much that when I got free, I went to the barn and yelled that I wanted the f'n thing cut off.  All of it cut off.

My wife walked into the tackroom, came out with the horse clippers, flipped over a water bucket and motioned me to sit down.  Less than 2 minutes later it was ALL gone--no time for regrets!

I'd go with the KV vet supply.  Thumbsup

Saw a guy this past weekend on a XX; his hair was longer than mine - aka waaay past the shoulder blades. Just 2 hair bands too. Go figure - I braid mine when riding or under a car so it doesn't get all messed up or caught on stuff.
I find it helps to use goo - prevents helmet head, keeps it looking neat/corporate(insofar as a longhair can be).
If you go the goo route, stick with 90 Wt or ChainWax.
PJ1 Blue works, but it's kinda sticky.

I pay too much for my haircut, but I always enjoy it.

I used to go to whatever cheap barber was nearby.  Our former babysitter - whom I have known since she was about 14 is now in her early 20's.  She went to cosmetology school.  I started going to her when she started at a salon.

She's a sweet girl and always cuts mine and my son's hair.  She'll even come to my house to cut it if I ask.

As to cutting for the motorcycle.  Not really though I have always had it cut short.  I probably get it cut more often than most but I have really thick hair that grows fast.

I trim my beard myself.

Shit, I didn't know McGregor was in Trainspotting! Thanks.

I have to agree with you there... and way too often. I have my hair dimensionally dyed in red and my normal hair color. If I wanted to keep the roots from showing it would be ever 4-6 weeks or something like that. Either way I just got lazy and am growing out my hair. It might look interesting in a few months when half of my hair is red and the other half is black.

I think with short highlights (if I remember correctly), my roommate went in very month or so. It got kinda expensive and time consuming.

I wear an OR balclava under my helmet. It semi-prevents helmet hair.

I say "semi" because my hair looks squashed by a helmet all the time, and had the thickness of rabbit fur.

Honestly once you get the right hair cut and layered like that it's quite easy to maintain.  Also the color layers are easy to achieve with a little patience.  That dye job is only two colors and a hair color "chunking" or "highlight" type kit can be found in almost any store that carries hair dye.

I've done a similar dye job to the photo cultureslayer posted but with the lighter color underneath as I have naturally dark hair and didn't want my roots to show.  All I did was pull up out of the way the hair I didn't want colored in a pony tail and dyed the rest.  The end result was a peekaboo effect of the lighter color showing through from underneath.

Oh and to keep this thread on topic...

I like to keep my hair cut in a bob style so that it fits neatly under my helmet.  Only thing I can stand tied around my head is a bandanna to keep the helmet head look to a minimum.  I've tried pulling my hair back to keep things tidy but can't stand the pulling sensation or the pressure from where the ponytail gets smooshed against my head.  Crazy

You guys should try having really thick hair. I've discovered my helmet fits differently depending on how I tie up my hair into my helmet. Oh well... As for that haircut, I may have to do something like that when this red/asian hair mix starts growing out and I can't stand the roots anymore.

I've got very thick hair (for now!) and have to chop it down to a #2 all over to avoid the helmet hair. It also grows very quickly so I generally give it a trim every 2 weeks, because of that I refuse to pay to have it cut. It'd cost me an arm and a leg just to have someone run a trimmer over my head. Sod that, I'll do it myself thank you very much!

Yup, I have to do pigtails for any day of riding.  I really do have LOTS of fine hair.  Enough that most stylists are sort of shocked and annoyed they have to cut it all.  Can't seem to find anyone that knows what to do with it.  So now I  just get $15 haircuts because it never seems to look really good no matter how much I pay.

My boyfriend has talked me into trying the manic panis semi-permanent stuff.  Sounds much better than getting the roots re-done.

Dimentional Dying works pretty well too. I had to keep my hair somewhat conservative when it's up, so I have my normal hair color in the front, and then the rear is split into three sections similar to horseshoes of red , normal color, and red. It gives a pretty cool mixture of red and normal so the roots are too bad
