The Thing (2011) - scifi/horror set in Antarctica.  This is supposed to be a prequel to the 1982 movie, but I am not familiar with that one.  The 2011 movie was entertaining, as long as you can see what is happening.  The filming was so dark that it sometimes made it hard to follow the action.  The creature effects were well done and I found the story to be enjoyable.  I will keep my eye open to watch the 1982 version now.

Just watched it in BR. I loved the first one and like this one just as much.  More of the same.

Captain America - Pretty cool if you make sure you accept the fact that it's based on a comic book.  It reminded me a lot of the Rocketeer and I think it's because it was the same director.  The woman/love interest was HOOOooooot!   Inlove

Pirates of Carribean - On Stranger Tides - Pointless.  Absolutely pointless.  After the 2nd one, it was all pointless.  More of the same and nothing new so it's old.

Obselidia - This is a strange movie but easy enough to understand.  I liked it because they took a road trip to Death Valley in a Mini Cooper.   Lol   Also, it is entertaining with a light, quiet subject and storyline.

Hunger Games - Parallels the book very closely.  Was a decent flick.  But the director of photography (or the camera operators)...someone...should be fired.  90% of the movie is filmed in claustrophobic (close in shots) shaky cam with 2 second staccato cuts.  God it was annoying as hell.  Some of the action/fight scenes are just a blur of nonsense on the screen, you can barely tell what's going on.

Killing Me Softly: Haven't watched it yet beyond fast forwarding to the hot scenes with Heather Graham.  Drool

--update-- watched it. a suspense thriller that's mediocre except for the above.

The Three Burials of Melquidades Estrada.....Fantastic indie film written by famed Mexican author, Guillermo Arriaga. Levon Helm, RIP, has a very small but hilarious role. I loved this film...brutal, violent and beautiful.

Brought the kids to see the stooges yesterday. Two big thumbs up. Lots of jokes go right over the lids heads that the adults appreciate, laughed out loud a handful of times. They did a great job with this one.

"Chimpanzee".  Took the family last night.  Good movie- the kids enjoyed it, as did I.  It painted a fairly realistic picture of the society, although they did a fair amount of anthropomorphism in it.  So it goes with a Disney nature movie.  On my own I wouldn't have seen it, with the family it was great.   Thumbsup

Hunger Games for me too!
Shaky camera stuff was annoying - especially since I knew to watch for it.  Lol
I need to read the books - but still thought it wasn't a bad way to spend 2 hours.

Since Netflix thread is basically dead - I want to suggest "The Killing". AMC has another good one going.
It's a who dunnit, soap opera with good character development and moments that makes it easy for you put
yourself in their place. 1st season is on Netflix and I will be buying the next from Amazon.

Don't bother with The Killing unless you're extremely patient...

It's one of the slowest moving stories I've ever watched.  They couldn't even solve one murder in an entire season!  Lol

Seriously, I'm not an ADD viewer, and it's reeaaallly sssslllloooowww.  It doesn't help that there's not one single sympathetic character in the entire storyline.

Still, it's like a (slow motion) train wreck...  I'm still watching it.

Safe: Good action flick. Statham kicks everyone's asses.

The Double: Good spy flick which surprised me because it have that Tofer guy in it.

The Fog Of war: Interesting documentary about Robert McNamara.

I watched this thing until the end of the last season. When the politician was going to get shot - well for me it turned into any other soap opera. They wanted to extend it another season so came up with something lame. Ain't gonna pay for the next season. I liked the female lead and her partner seems like a pretty good guy - even if he is a recovering addict.

Captain America - Should have been titled Captain Meh.  Pretty middle of the road.  But the part I loved the most is when they go to the secret military lab that's under an antique shop in NY.  They go to great effort to make the store look nondescript, little old lady proprietor (with a tommy gun under the counter), secret passwords etc...yet they pull up to the store in a military vehicle and they walk in wearing army uniforms.  Oh boy. Lol

I saw that the other weekend.  I used to really enjoy the 3-Stooges when I was young.  I can't say I actually laughed very much at this one.  Either physical comedy doesn't translate well to today or they just did a poor attempt at re-interpreting it.  Bringing in the Jersey Shore crew only further degraded my memories of the original show.  I don't mean to sound like a stick in the mud because I enjoy stupid humor - it just was not written or executed well, IMHO.  I asked my 13-year old daughter her opinion on the movie and slapstick humor, and she thought it was dumb.  Then again, she is 13 - she considers almost everything dumb!  Lol

+1.  If you go see this one, get to the theater early.  It was PACKED and we had to watch from the 2nd row!   EEK!  Very entertaining movie - funny with great effects.

Do you have to have seen the other movies (Iron Man, IM2, Thor, etc.) to appreciate/understand the movie or is this one stand-alone-ish enough? I admit to being intrigued, but I also don't want to invest the time in the other movies just to see this one.

Not necessary at all, unless you are a big Comic Book nerd.  However if you were a big Comic Book nerd, you would have already seen all of them anyway!  It helps with the backstory but it should be watchable as a stand alone.  I have seen most of them besides Thor.

We saw it Sunday. If it's not the "best ever" it's damned close. The choice of Joss Whedon as writer, director, producer was excellent and the end result shows that he knew the depth of the material and characters he was bringing to the screen.

not really, but renting them over the next year or two while waiting for The Avengers to hit the rental market will give you a broader appreciation of their (film) back stories. Always watch past the credits even on The Avengers.

Sequence of watching (some corrections expected).

Hulk 1 (with Eric Bana - forget it... it never happened.)

Iron Man 1
Hulk 2
Iron Man 2

I agree with that.. just to add my take on how I like them from least to most.. and other than the Eric Bana Hulk I liked them all. (Actually I liked the comic book style of cinematography but hated the story).
