Why?  Every Guzzi motorcycle built between 1921 and 1967 was chain-driven.

The longitudinal V-Twin and shaft-drive arangement we see today was first introduced with the V7 of 1967.

Here's something else that might interest you.  Bicilindrica.  Guzzi's championship-winning V-twin 500GP bike from 1933-1951.  The inspiration for Dr. Taglioni's Ducati V-twins:
