Okay, I tried to go on the cheap end and go with a VPS plan. Apparently we're already kicking the servers ass, and I'm getting e-mails from the hosting company.
I will work on it to resolve it, but it's going to take more oomph and more money...of course. (sigh)

Thanks.
Hopefully a bit of $$ started flowing in.
Let us know if it is not flowing in quickly enough.
I am sure that many others feel the same as I do, that you should not have to come out of pocket in any way to keep this running smoothly. We appreciate all that you have done for us so far.

What about a CPU specific money drive. You could create a special badge for people who are donating specifically for more CPUs in the server. We will need four at least.

Wow, I actually got ahold of a real live human server admin in a matter of minutes. He's gonna try a few things on the server side, and I he recommended some vBulletin tweaks.
He will continue to monitor and promises the site won't be disabled without us figuring out a solution or upgrading to the next plan.
Thanks.

Computers confuse me. I'm not Al Gore, and I'm no expert in the interweb. But another S-T site ran with almost the same goofballs for a few weeks without any CPU issues. What was done better over on the other site? It doesn't make sense to me that within a day of STN popping back up (congrats and thanks, BTW) that the computer hosts are already seeing problems. We don't have the membership or the database we did a month ago.

The other site (FarkledUp, I assume) has a much beefier server dedicated to it.

Skipper,
I don't think this is really a money issue. I know it's YOUR money that has to be footed initially to get a better server/cpu but I am willing to bet that if we needed a better CPU that the members of STN would contribute fully towards making that happen.
I'd like to suggest that if we need a new CPU/Server and it's going to cost $X, simply make a special post requesting funds to do so.
"Hey All. This is UFO. We're running 98% capacity on the server and we need to upgrade asap. The cost will be $750 (or whatever, don't ask me!). Your donations will be most appreciated here."
Tell us what it's going to cost and then let us help you!

I too, am no fan of ho-ing but I've kinda given up on it and come to assume it's a fact of cyber-life.
So we need a beefy enough server to accomodate those who must ho. Toss my name in there (and the gloriously named Beck-zuki) with people who are willing to step up if we need extra $$$.
I want ST.N back with no compromises, no scrimping, no pinching pennies and sacrificing performance but a full-on, balls out, rompin', stompin', ragin',
ST.N!

Just a suggestion that is sure to be unpopular, but why not eliminate the post counter. If the number of posts each person has made is not displayed there will be less motivation to be a ho.

Look, everyone gets all cagey about specific dollar amounts. I've already contributed $50 to STN, and would happily contribute another $100 (or more). No, I'm not rich, but STN means that much to me (and I've certainly gotten more than $100 worth out of it).
But—as has been said in other threads—I'd like to have some assurance that my money will go towards a robust, bombproof STN server solution!
Kudos to Neal for not asking people for money, but c'mon—if every
active
member contributed just $25, that's a few thousand dollars or more! MORE than enough to set us up on a "Galactic-Scale" server!
So seriously,
nobody (including Neal) should even mention money
—because the reality is,
it's not an issue
. Ask and ye shall receive. Period.
Scott
PS - The
only
way money could be an issue is if everyone who has donated is sending in their pocket change ($1.57...$3...$0.27). If everyone is sending Neal at least $25 (which is not unreasonable and doable by all), then I repeat:
money is not an issue
.
