Not Aussie-specific, but there's no Asia region;  feel free to ignore me ...

I'm moving from the U.S. to Tokyo and am trying to get some input on bringing my WeeStrom to Japan.  How much of a hassle is importing, can I even ride in Tokyo, etc.  I think I may be better off buying a Japan-only model once I get there (so many more models than they offer in the U.S.).

Any comments are appreciated.  Also any links to Japan bike forums would be helpful.

TIA, Tom

No autos after year 1976.

The embargo on vehicles does not prohibit shipment of motorcycles manufactured after March 1976. Some minor emission control modifications may be required after entry into Japan depending upon the make and model of the motorcycle.

There is a site out that for Foreigners in Japan and riding motorcycling.  Google for it.  You're in for a whole new world!

Found it:  it's gaijinriders.com (gaijin is a foriegner, I think sometimes derogatory).

Bottom line:  imports are subject to up to 100% duty and anything over 400cc requires the top tier license;  my U.S. license only converts to a mid-level license.

I will sell the Ninja 250 and VStrom 650 before I move, then look for a unique (non-U.S.) model when I get settled.

Maybe this XR250 Motard for my daily Tokyo commute?  http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j159/toma_nova/xr250-motard_2060330.jpg
