The KTM 300exc 2-stroke exhaust note is less loud, and at a higher frequency/less distance-traveling bass brap than the one on the 450exc 4-stroke....perhaps there was another issue beside the exhaust one?

We lose a lot of gournd to noise. Even back when it was mostly 2-strokes and the EPA was going crazy trying to ban 2-strokes the only reason they noticed to begin with is because they could hear the bikes from a distance. If they don't know you are there, they won't come up with a reason why you shouldn't be.

First trip was today, great place to ride so it's not free. Another 17 mile loop 30 min from home, but watch the slick clay. I've also got to join

Emissions. Most of the manufacturers are fazing out 2 strokes. Honda announced that 2007 would be the last year for their 2 strokes.

Isn't another problem destruction of trails? I ask because the Tasker's Gap/Peters Mill Run ORV trails in Virginia's George Washington National Forest are closed for 6 weeks (late Jan to Feb) just to keep the trails from being completely wiped out and give them a chance to heal.
Maybe in the good ol' days this wasn't a problem because you could ride anywhere? Almost seems like confining riders to ORV trails just makes the problem of trail erosion worse?
And what about federal lands out west? I know nothing about them...but (for some reason) I was under the impression that there are a bazillion acres of BLM-managed land that are pretty much wide open for anything—is that not true?

+1 more for Hatfield McCoy trail system.
I've been there three times in the last five years, and the people welcome you with open arms. Cost is $35/wk to ride 500+ miles of trails. How can you beat that? Paragon Adventure Park in Hazelton PA is $25 a day!
I grew up riding dirtbikes on the Meadowlands area of North Jersey near Giants' Stadium. I remember the days when the cops would show up just to watch us ride. They'd hang out with us for a bit, get a call and be gone for the rest of the day. Never a problem up until about 15 years ago when the enviro-nazis took over NJ. Nowadays the closet "legal" riding area is at least 2 hra south and sucks big time. At least 2 hrs west to Paragon and you've got a real nice place to ride.
NJ IS, in fact, currently working on a plan to open two more legal riding areas in the state. Finally the off road voice is being heard, and we just might get what we wanted after all.
BTW.....my weekend "SOO not legal" place to ride is only 45 mins north. Haven't seen a cop in 6 years. I think they call that Russian Roulette.
Truthfully, the cops know we ride there, and as long as we follow the trails we never have a problem. I'm sure it will all change soon enough though.

I'm pretty lucky in the PNW (as Blue will attest to
) There are a couple of ORV parks that give me a good choice of terrain
Not to mention tons of logging/forest service roads, some of which are gated, but not all.
And then there are just plain roads that have no real reason to exist other than my pleasure
I don't doubt that there are good places near you. Check out
ADVrider
, put on your thick skin and check out the regional areas. I plan on learning about quite a few "other" places to ride this spring/summer by hooking up with these guys

If anyone knows an area around Northern IL let me know, it would be nice if there were some fire roads around here.

Pa. riders ( and a good chunk of region 6 riders ) will soon have a new place opening this spring. 6000 acres bought by Cambria County. It will open with 50 miles of trails, and will be constantly expanding. 10 minutes from my house.

I have a dilemma. I live in a semi-rural area, with literally an 80-acre or so field RIGHT behind our house. Trouble is, it's a dedicated farm field - and I doubt the farmer would look too kindly to knobby tires tearing up the pasture, even off-season. And I'm jonesing for a dirtbike.
So my dilemma is this - I live in an area with lots of wide open spaces and I see a lot of folks (kids mainly) riding in the dirt here-and-there. So do these people have permission of the land owners to ride? Or are they simply taking the chance no one will complain for trespassing on their property? There really aren't any rider-dedicated areas - at least none of which I know. I can't believe my situation is unique.
So where to YOU ride??
Oooooh, I come from California, Maybe we can meet on bikerkiss someday!
