Ok where would you go after you pass Hyner & hit 120 ?
If you mean to get to Clearfield, follow 144 south to Moshannon, then 879 (I think) to Karthaus and on to Clearfield. Or, west on 120 to Sinnemahoning, across the bridge and up Wykoff Run, left at the stop sign in to Quehanna and on to 879 again. Or, 120 west to 555 to Bennezette, Medix Run, and back to Quehanna. All depends on how far you want to ride. There's not a bad road up there!

First is most direct. Second is most entertaining. Third is most scenic. You choose.
But seriously, there aren't many bad road choices in the area. I say pick one for
the ride in and some other for the ride home, you won't be disappointed.
If you choose the third route and you have a little time to spare, take 144 north
from Renovo to Tamarack then turn back towards 120 via Kettle Creek SP.
If your new to the area the turn off in Sinnemahoning through Wykoff Run is
a must-do ride and shouldn't be missed!

I don't know the schedule yet, scraperman1. I'm sure we'll figure something out in the next 2-months.
Sorry Rince. Winter's been long, spring's under 30 days away and I'm itchin' to be in the wind. I'll watch the thread. Thanks for leading this day trip,

I hear you! I'm itching, too. I've been looking over some route options, trying to find the most exciting way there.

Ok - this what I thin I want to do but how do I get from Tamarack to the top of RT 872/Sinnemahoning SP ?

Here's what I would do: As I stated, return to 120 from Tamarack via Kettle Creek SP, turn right ( East ) toward Sinnemahoning. Turn right ( North ) at 872. Ride toward Austin.
Stop at the G.B. Stevenson Dam and take a picture.
Continue on to Austin, and a few miles past Austin stop at the collapsed dam and say wow. Take a picture. ( I'm not kidding )
Return to Austin and turn right ( West ) on 607, and if you see it, veer left on Cowley Hill Rd. Either will take you to 155, then turn left ( South ) and follow it to Emporium where it meets up with 120 again.
Turn left ( East ) toward Renovo. This is actually the best way to ride 120, with the sun at your back and the river on your right.
This time, when you get to Sinnemahoning, turn right and go over the bridge, on the far side pull off on the left for a good view of the bridge, the river, and the mountains, which will seem larger than life from this vantage point.
Your now on Wykoff Run Rd, ride it to the end, re-group and say wow.
At the end, turn left ( South-East ) on Quehanna Hwy, follow it to the end where it meets 879, ( near Karthaus ) stay right and take 879 all the way into Clearfield.
It's entirely possible to ride this entire route and hardly see a car until you pass I-80 just outside of Clearfield.

SLK50's route is right on. I was planning on hitting the same roads/sights. I just mapped it out and it comes to 160 miles from the Hyner Overlook to Clearfield. That's a nice afternoon of riding.

I'd be coming from the east . After Hyner I'll come out on 120. From your directions I think you had me coming in from the west. How would I hit both dams, the "good view of the brige", etc if I started where 120 meets 144 ?

Well, You've pretty much got it right. But to clarify, assuming your starting from atop Hyner View, come down off the mountain and turn left at the bottom onto the local road ( 1014 )and take this back to 120. Turn right ( West, toward Renovo ) and continue on to Sinnemahoning and Route 872. You will indeed be coming from the East on this stretch.
Much later, when you rejoin 120 in Emporium ( after going to Austin on 872 ) you will then travel East on 120 back to Sinnemahong. Like spokes on a wheel and Sinnemahoning as the hub.
I not very good at posting things like maps or I would show you. Perhaps someone
who is good at it will lay it out and post a map for everyone to see? Garry, you busy?
I'd like to add: 120 from Lock Haven to Hyner is good ( scenic ) but I think 664 is better. Connect it to Hyner via 44 and 1014. About the same time and distance. You'll get enough of 120 later to not miss this stretch.
Watch for the turn-off to Hyner View on your left along 1014. Ride to the top and say wow! This may be the best view in all of PA. Don't forget to take a picture!

Awesome Garry.
THanks for doing this again.
Eric,
Wanna ride out with chips and me (and whomever else we wrangle up) on Saturday? We make a day-ride of the trip out there, finding fun roads, then settle in in time for dinner and drinks at the motel.

Most likely this is gonna have to be a one day trip on Sunday. Wish I could head up with you Saturday.

Here ya go... I would skip 664 from Lock Haven and take 44 instead. The climb up the mountain from jct 414 to 664 is very very good. Also note that you can shorten the loop by a LOT by making a left onto 144 south in Renovo and taking that to 879 into Clearfield. 144 south of Renovo is one of the best roads in the area. 30+ miles of nice sweepers in the forest with a fairly twisty climb out of Renovo. That and 555 are the only other highlights north of I-80 not on the shown route. For people coming from NY, note that 287 south out of Wellsboro gets really nice as you head south to 973 in Salladasburg. 973 is a country road shortcut over to the good part of 44.

Thanks, Garry. Your awesome.
I gotta learn me how ta do dat.
So many roads, so little time! It's nearly impossible to tie all the best roads into a single route.
It's what keeps me coming back to the area.
120, 664, 44, 414......choice usually depends on time frame and my mood.
Maybe a good sampler out of Clearfield would link 555, 120 and 144 South of Renovo back to Clearfield for those daytrippers pressed for time.

I've done that the last two years after lunch, including a run up to the overlook. If I make a weekend of it, that will probably be my Sunday morning ride. 879, Quehanna Hwy, Wyckoff Run, 120 to Hyner Overlook, 120 back to Renovo, 144 south, 879 back to Clearfield (or 53/Airport Rd/322).
