Ok, now this is wierd - the wife just got home and checked the mail.  We got a letter from a couple down in Yucaipa saying "We want to buy your house.  Please call us at XXX-XXX-XXXX".  This letter is legitimately hand written (no computer letter) and the postmark is local.

Is there some kind of new scam going on out there that I'm not aware of???

I will call them, hey, it might be legit and my wife and I have thought about moving.  Just wierd...

Anyone seen this before?  Possible scam?

My grandfather bought many of his houses by walking to the door and asking if they were interested in selling.  I don't think he ever wrote a letter though.

Last I checked it was illegal to put mail into a mailbox that wasn't processed by the post office. Smile

Heck call them back (from a phone booth) and ask them about the deal, just do not tell them where you live. Heck it may be real but I doubt it. And do not give them any details about you or your house, heck string them along just for fun.

Could be legit, I have a friend that owns a bunch of rental houses... he's made unsolicited offers in the past when there was a property he was interested in for one reason or another.

Ummm, they mailed it addressed to my wife and I.  I have a sneaky suspicion that they already KNOW where I live!

Ok, I called the number.  Spoke with a receptionist - her comment was that they are real estate agents and she's thinks they buy houses and turn them into rental properties.  Which actually makes sense as my house used to be a rental and is actually almost the perfect rental property given how anal the association rules are.

I left a message.  We'll see, but I'm not holding my breath.

I bet they give you a cashier's check for $1,000,000 and ask for change.

Not uncommon in hot markets - folks trying to avoid Realtor fees and such.  Also happens to a depressed property if a flip is possible.  I've had folks knock on my door asking me to sell my near beach property...
