1993 Ducati 750 SS

A buddy of mine is looking a used but pristine 1993 750 SS. Please comment on good and bad traits of this Ducati model including maintenance and repair issues.

Mid 90's Ducs may or may not have electrical issues. Belts need to be changed but other than that the motors are pretty good. They are fun bikes to toodle around on. Great in the canyons and fun on the track. Not a ton of power but nice, usable torque in an attractive package.

1) Check the tubes that are welded onto the steering head, they are known to crack. At one time, Ducati woudl "good-will" exchange them, but they no longer do this. Many people have gussets weled into place when their crack.

2) Some of the early 90's bikes were known to pull cylinder studs out of the blocks

3) On the 900s that were equipped with aluminum swingarms, they were know to crack.

I can't think of any others, right now...


Good?.....the 2V engines are easy to work on and they have a reputation for being bullet-proof. You have to do soem really stupid things to blow one up. Valve adjustments are recommended every 6k miles. Belt changes every 12k miles or two years, whichever comes first. Once the bike gets 12k-18k miles on it, the valves settle in nicely and a lot of people switch to 12k miles for the valve checks/adjustments. I still recommend at least checking the belt tension every 6k, though......They are fun, light, nimble little bikes.

I would certainly not go that far. But I will say that the motor on my 99 SS was much more reliable than my 06 MTS.

I have what must be the same motor in my Monster and have to tell ya it pulls nicely.

If it's a true SS and not the Sport model, it should be a cool bike. The Sport model had a single Weber carb and was a real bitch to get to run right. if I recall a buddy's experience.

I would certainly not go that far. But I will say that the motor on my 99 SS was much more reliable than my 06 MTS.

James you had a lemon and should have used the CA lemon law to bury that problem.  Too bad.  I have a booklet on it that was sent to me by a legal firm (that lists all the cases it has won so you feel good to use them) so all these stories that the lemon law does not apply  to motorbikes in CA is simply not true.
