Man reeked of booze: Crown

BARRIE -- Slurring, staggering and reeking of alcohol, a man on trial for driving head-on into a motorcycle rider accused the police officers of treating him like a criminal, court heard yesterday.

Ronald Watson of Collingwood is on trial before a jury charged with impaired driving causing death, failing to stop to help with the intent to escape, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and failing to provide a breath sample.

The victim, Albert Young of Toronto, was enjoying his 44th birthday on a sunny Easter Sunday afternoon when he was hit head-on as he rode his motorcycle along Hwy. 26 near Wasaga Beach on April 20, 2003.

Witnesses testified they saw Watson driving erratically in his red minivan, pulling in and out of the wrong lane to pass cars and weaving onto the shoulder in the moments before he crashed into Young, who died of massive head injuries.

Court heard Watson then sped along the highway for 29 km, forcing other drivers off the road while his busted fender flapped in the wind before police finally caught up with him.

"He practically fell out of his van onto the road, bleary-eyed and smelling of alcohol," Crown attorney Ann Tierney said in her opening statement.

She said a search of his van found a half-full bottle of Bacardi rum and two empty bottles of Captain Morgan rum.

Watson initially refused to take a breath test, and when he finally did he blocked the breathing tube with his tongue then told police: "You guys are treating me like a criminal."

When police charged him with Young's death, Watson responded: "The guy died? You mean the guy died? It's not my fault, he cut me off."

Tierney said Watson later laughed while he was in the police cruiser, insisting he was not drunk.

Yes.  However he'll probably get a slap on the wrist or the case will be thrown out on a 'technicality'.  Perhaps this is a case for vigilante justice?

I'm sure he didn't mean it and if he thinks about it long enough, he'll forgive the motorcyclist for scratching his truck. I think he should be given 2 months of house arrest and made to do a hour of community service.

If it weren't for booze, the cops and judges would be out of work. This is nuts.

Watson should be sentenced to hard labour, paid at a rate to maintain Young's heirs and successors, for the rest of his days.
See, on this side of the border, the Government sells all the booze this guy consumed.
The pool has started already: his lawyer will plead him out, 'cause he was too drunk to have formed the decisions necessary to kill.
I'm sick of the lack of responsibility, the pitiful enforcement of existing laws and statutes, and sick of the carnage.

& than theres the ass in NL who drowned his twin 3 1/2 year old girls & says  he was assaulted by a corrections officer for what he did to the girls.

I personally think being a copper or crown would be a unrewarding job. Hundreds upon hundreds of hours for what??? 18mths house arrest. A sad legal syatem we live under in Canada.
