Bah. So, yesterday I had the wonderful opportunity to drop a digital camera. Thankfully it was my wife's P&S (Nikon S610), and not my D90. The lens is hosed - at first it was crooked, and the LCD would say "Lens Error". Now it just doesn't focus. Well, it goes through the focusing motions, but the results are a blur. The camera cost $160 and was purchased around Christmastime last year.

My question is - is it worth getting it fixed? Or would the cost of repair exceed buying a new camera? Honestly the camera has just been alright. It's small, which is what my wife wanted, but otherwise it's been nothing special.

Quite possibly if it was only $160 to begin with. You won't know until you send it in.

The way that Canon works (others are probably similar) is you fill out a web form that gives you all the info and you ship it to them. Then you get an email back with a price quote that you can accept and pay, or else decline. If you decline they ship it back and you are only out what you paid to ship it to them. The entire round trip, including repairs, takes less than a week.

Odds are repair is less than purchase price but not by so much that you won't think twice about just upgrading to a new camera.

Well, the EBay median price on a new Nikon S610 is now around $240.00.  EEK!  I thought electronics prices are supposed to go down as models get older, not up.

It's not the destination, but the journey, that counts. A sport-tourer's ride between two points is seldom a straight line. He will often seek the most convoluted route possible to reach his destination.

I was very close to replacing my D70 with either a D300 or D700, until I realized that I just don't like carrying all that weight around. So, I went instead with an E-P1. Overall, I am quite pleased with it. Yes, the AF is slow, but for me that's not really an issue. Having something that I can carry around all day (with an extra lens or two...) without fatigue is a huge bonus. And the pictures aren't bad, either.

Some pics:

Anyone else get theirs yet?  Bigsmile  Gotta put that 12% off coupon to good use, somehow.

If this (Or the G11) were available last year I would have had far more trouble deciding to buy
my Leica D-Lux 4. I've been playing with both (S90 and G11) at the store and they are damned
impressive.

Yeah, that coupon came in just in time. I've been  Drool  about it since I first read the early reviews. I chose the S90 which makes it perfect for indoor events where a DSLR would be too cumbersome to carry around. It makes a great backup to the DSLR when on vacation.

Fred, one thing I forgot to mention. There is a custom aftermarket grip for the S90 that will be coming soon. They also make one for your Leica.

I've seen the grip but I cant use it if I expect to keep using the case I have for my Leica. As it is, I'm considering selling it in order to get the Olympus EP1 (Maybe the "2" if its impressive enough) to use as my "knockaround".

Yeah, but you lose the portability/pocketabilty factor with the Oly EP1. I like the idea of having manual SLR-like capability without the bulk.
