Well I finally did it. I just brought home my first DSLR. A shiny new Canon T2i. The battery is on the charger now. I'll be spending some quality time with it tomorrow.

The body feels very small and very light. Neither of which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned but a 5D isn't really in the cards right now so I'll learn to love it. I'm going to test the kit lens tomorrow but I have a feeling that my trusty old 28-105 USM will end up on the camera before too long. I really, really like that lens. We'll have to see if I still like with the cropped sensor.

Okay, so it's not the high dollar kit some of you are using, but I just picked up a Canon SX120is.  So far I really like it for a small point and shoot. Picture quality is very good.  Now, if I could just learn to take better pictures

Actually, while I use an SLR, my wife still doesn't have a point and shoot she likes. Does your wife/girlfriend use that new Canon of yours? Does it fit in a purse or pocket?

a little big for pockets, but the picture quality is great for a cheap(ish) little camera. I'm still learning all the features, but you can manually adjust ISO, aperture, shutter speed, etc..., shoot in macro for extreme closeups, anti-shake, etc... It's also got an auto mode and an "easy" mode for those who just want to point and shoot. I've no idea what the hell I'm doing, but I'm digging into all of the adjustable settings and playing around with it. At this point though, I'm still shooting in Auto quite a bit....

I'd recommend dumping auto mode and switch to program mode for your point and shoot moments. It allows you to adjust your exposure up or down and gives you some control while not having to know everything.

Just bought an Oregon Scientific Action Cam ATC5K.  Looking for suggestions on mounting to my FJR.  Tried strapping it onto the clutch master cylinder, but it still shakes a lot on bumps and at speed...

Jumped in to DSLR. Got tired of cheap P&S cameras, and got a really great deal on a Rebel XT. Looking at lenses now, trying to decide what to grab.

The best way to determine what your next lens purchase is to figure out what you couldn't do with the current lens.

Need advice,

I'm replacing a Nikon SLR (film) with a DSLR.

I would like to keep the lenses I allready have which means I'm looking for a body with a AF motor in it.

The only two even close to my price range are the D90 and the D7000.  

Does anyone have any experience with either, pros cons, I'm just looking for a body, I'll see how my lenses do with the body then decide what I want for this camera.

I'm aware that these two bodies use the DX lenses and are not 35mm bodies so my lenses with be cut by a factor of 1.5, but other than changing the effective zoom does this have any problems?  Do I have to worry about the oversized image refracting back onto the sensor?

I'm a relative novice but Have an old Nikkormat Ftn body (fully manual) that I learned on and still use for fun.


SO what say the EOE in the camera thread.

I can't speak to Nikon's line up but I can tell you that I'm using my old 35mm Canon AF lenses with a crop sensor camera with no problem.

I have the D90 and it's a wonderful camera. I have an older 50mm prime lens for it and it works fine. However, I don't know if I'd buy that body now, new. The one that sort of replaced it in Nikon's lineup is the D5100. My uncle recently bought that (and the Tamron 18-275 lens) and he loves it, but he's not a photographer, rather a guy with a really nice setup but shooting on Auto.

If you get a smoking deal on a D90 I'd get it and not look back, but know that the video capability of it is a novelty only. It's not a practical use, though it may be improved on the D5100.

I hear ya. The kit lense is just fine for my casual shooting. Just looking for zoom for catching the wildlife and trying to decide if I need IS and USM(or whatever that acronym is).

Anyone have any experience with the rugged/waterproof cameras?

I got a Lumix for Kili last year; it got rained on in Yellowstone (not much, at all) and expired in a puff of focusing errors. It's almost as much to repair as to replace (and I'm sure Panasonic won't honour the warranty since, well -- there was some water) so I'm looking at alternatives.

Considering the Olympus TG-610; I don't need 14MP but I like the bigger zoom. Not sure of the size of the beast, though.

Any suggested alternatives for the 'DOH' factor?

On our trip south to Kentucky in October, we swung into Target to look at their digital offerings.  I really had my eye on the Nikon D3100 in red, but my arms don't reach the bottom of my pockets.  Guy behind the counter says wait a sec, reaches down in a drawer and pulls out a D3000 with a $300 price tag.  It sold immediately.    I used it a bit on that trip and took it on our cruise.  I'm liking it a lot compared to the Fuji S700 it replaced.  That went to the wife for her to use.  The only lens I'm needing is an intermediate zoom/telephoto in the 200mm range.  Maybe Santa will find one for me.

So I walked into Henry's (a Canadian high-end photo shop, the kind where they still sell film and darkroom supplies) and I asked their Canon guy to help me have arguments to convince she-who-holds-the-purse-strings that I need an EOS-60D ($999, body only) more than an $800 Rebel T3i (with a kit lens)

I came very, very close to walking out with a $1,400 EOS-7D (without glass).

Damn, I might need a second job to pay for toys...

Got sick of Sony, and missing really good shots for the dumbest reasons, camera walking off focus, or not shooting at all. So, I finally got off my ass and switched to Nikon. After some craigslist finds, I have a healthy initial setup. The one thing 12 yrs of Minolta/Sony did help  me with, was learning how just a few lenses are all you need. As long as you're willing to sp[end the money on good glass.

Here's my xmas presents, to me, from me, so far.


Just a few more things, and I'm done. The next purchase after I complete my set, will be bodies only.

Congrats on your conversion over to Nikon. Which Nikon body is that pictured? What other lenses are you looking to add to the collection?

Any suggestions on a quality P&S under $300?  I had a nice Kodak back when digicams were new, replaced it with a crap one I can'd stand, and want a real camera again.  

The reviews seem to point to either the elph 500hs or sony hx9v depending on how much I want to spend.  I already have too many expensive hobbies to get a DSLR.
