Harley ignition/security immobilzer. Worth getting? How's it work?  Is it a good thing?  Worth me spending the extra $400 for it? (even though Ducati seems to have a similar system built into it's keys for 'free').

How about the proximity key fob on a new Connie?

If you tend to park in a high theft area maybe it's worth it. I'm sure a "real" thief takes it in stride. There's one on my R-K but I'll only use it on a trip overnight. One button fob, pretty basic.

I find the system to be an annoyance. The fob is too big to have on the key ring (on the sportster), and the glide doesn't even need a key except to just lock and unlock the ignition. I'd rather have a conventional key and good insurance.

But it works by the bike  not being able to start if the fob is near it, right?  If the bike has already been started and the fob is dropped/lost, it will still run until it is switched off?
Any idea as to the range of the thing?

You are correct; it's only needed for starting and if you drop it on the road, you're fine until the engine stops.

The effective range on it is between 5 and 8 feet.

Thanks.  So it's basically like the chip in the Ducati keys.  Except I guess Harley gives you a big fob so you feel that it's worth spending the money for.
Either way, I think I'd get it (and all the new ones on the showroom floor seem to have them anyway) even if it should be standard equip.  It'll help prevent the typical ride away theft.  As for pros, pretty much nothing will stop them apart from a good insurance policy!

If you want to have a siren then you will have to putchase it seperately. I have on 07 and it is plug and play to install.

I have a security system on my Harley. It doesn't include the siren. It works fine. I use it when my bike is parked overnight in motel lots. Some insurance companies offer a discount for bikes with a security system.

My Street Bob comes with it, had no choice in the matter!  But I want it anyway, as any bike without it is ridiculously easy to steal.  Insert screwdriver into ignition, turn, buh-bye...
Every bit helps.

Awesome. Congrats and best of luck. We do, of course, demand pictures.
