who do I pull up next to at a light but some dude on a gayer scooter than mine, some tiny retro-styled job

Yep, sometimes it's hard to tell just which scooter is "gayer" but you can always be sure that on any scooter the rider can keep his/her legs closed so his/her skirt doesn't blow up in his/her face.

I know if I was gonna wear a skirt I'd ride a scooter.

Ah, good, a textbook example of machismo. County's exagerrated show of disdain is intended to affirm and bolster his desired image of a man's man, while the subtext clearly shows a person at odds with his true sexuality while being deeply confused and afraid of his own natural inclinations. In this case the person ridiculing riding scooters brings up wearing skirts because he secretly desires to do both. Scooters ARE fun to ride, and skirts look like they might be quite comfortable. Alas, he cannot, due to his fear of being ridiculed by others. Since he fears ridicule, he ridicules. The strategy of braying loudest and most often is intended to preclude any derision that may be directed at him.

I don't know.

But this past weekend at the IMS in Seattle I worked the WMRRA booth (local racing club).  It was interesting to talk to the people that don't race that came up to the booth.  The ones that had something going on generally had fear in their eyes.  Now I understand why people look at people who do things like race and go "My god you guys are crazy"  Its because they are afriad.

I've never meet a cruiser guy with fear in his eyes.

Anyone can ride in a straight line.

Richard Petty said that once, years ago, to the drag racing guys.  They put him in a funny car (when they were going a lot slower than today) and he proceeded to destroy the car and injure some fans in his one and only run.

What does this say about the riders? Well, people who ride sportbikes are riding a girl: they are either hot bicurious girls (yay!) or very masculine straight men (Argh argh argh MORE POWER!).

If the definition is "racking up the miles" (l-d and total), I think I'd have to go with the cruisers. They all rode to Deals Gap, most of the sportbikes I saw there were trailered. Shrug

This IS good stuff -- and on a Monday too!

With a Mac you can ''snapshot'' the whole thing as a pic. I wish I had done that with a few from the old days of STN.

I have always ridden sport bikes. I have never wanted a cruiser, although I must say that I have seen the occasional Harley that looks like fun to ride.

On occasion I have bought sensible motorcycles, but soon tired of them because I did not get the buzz that I needed. Nothing made me feel better than blasting around a few curves, feeling the rear tire start to loose a little traction, maybe even a bit more than a little. Over the years this has kept me riding sport bikes.

Now the cruiser rider, or so it appears to me, is a more sedate animal. He appears quite happy (Harley riders take note) to make a lot of noise, while driving at somewhat slow speeds. I saw one the other day, I could tell from the noise his open pipes were making, and the manner in which he was making that noise, that he was definately trying to attract attention. He did, mine. He accelerated ( if you can call it that) away from some lights, and did an exaggerated swerve around a pot hole. The 900lb beast he was riding, was as elegant as an elephant. I happened to see him a few minutes later, stopped at the side of the road, his beer belly hanging over his jeans, wearing the obligatory Harley jacket.

Now the sport bike rider, he doesn't do the exaggerated swerve, he merely flicks the bike around obstacles, his athletic body, as one with the bike, poetry in motion, his machoness obvious, but understated.

Ah, it appears very apparent to me that the sport bike rider personifies all that is good and brave about riding motorycles, whereas the cruiser rider (not all, look at Yellow Wolfs Deals Gap ride) illustrates what a car looks like on two wheels. Smile Smile Smile Smile

I cant remember his name. The village people type guy in black leather that used to pop in on his hugger. He needs to come in here and defend his and other cruiser riders honor. What the heck is his name?Smile

I love the whole riding in the wind bit, the feel of carving corners.  If that's the only reason I road then a cruiser would suit me fine. I think cruisers and their riders are cool.  Like any crowd they have their share of A$$hats though.

Sadly, even though crashing scares the piss outta me, I'm a bit of an adrenalin junkie.  I love the rush that comes with testing my limits so I'm drawn to bikes whose limits I cannot easily reach.

Macho? Heck no, just an aging rush junkie.

On the other hand one who is sure of his own masculinity has confidence to make comments about skirts and scooters without fear that questions that inevitably arise from his comments will injure his conceptualization of self, thereby freeing him from restraints that those less confident in their manhood might feel.  We might therefore conclude from County's statement that his is, in fact, supremely confident in himself and his masculinity and needs no outside reinforcement of his self-esteem.  It is certain, in this instance, that derisive comments made toward his scooter/skirt comments will have no effect on him, and we may find that he does indeed, on occassion, don a skirt and ride a scooter.

Geez County, I hope this doesn't hurt your feelings.  Or keep you from your skirt/scooter thing.
