That is a shame, on our way to Italy this summer Gaz and I were stopped at the Swiss border for around 20 minutes while they checked all of our paper work. Took it all in to an office where they kept looking at a computer screen, then back at us, then back at our documents.
The man who was talking to us had the most fantastic stereotypical twirly moustache as well, unfortunately we didn't think that taking photos would go down all that well if we were already arousing suspicion.
I dunno why they stopped us, we were the most innocent looking people around

As previously stated, I was held up as well. Funny you should mention pictures because I took out my handy cam to record our stay at the Swiss Border, and the Border gyard told me to please stop recording. I asked why and he simply replied "That's the only warning you will get"..Needless to say I put the camera away
This is by far not the norm for border crossing, but I tell you when you come to a border crossing like these..ARGH!!!!!

Okay, here's an update on this having just passed from France to Switzerland, near Geneva, several times over the past few days.
I really can't see any difference in the border. On both the Swiss and French side there seem to be as many guards and police hanging around as before, and it looks as though random vehicles are still being stopped. I didn't have to show my passport, but that was generally the case in the past too.
So don't expect too much change, is the message.

I received similar undesirable treatment by a Swiss border guard who looked as if he gargled with Lysol.
Turned me off from Swiss border crossings.
On the other hand. A cop in Lucerne once pointed me in the direction of the best roads for motorbike riding
