All right I need to replace the rear on my VFR.  The only other time I've had to replace a tire, I ordered online and took it to Cycle Gear to have them mount it.  Any better alternatives?  I'm probably going to be taking my Honda to Maxey's for it's 8k service, how much will they charge to mount a tire they didn't sell?  Has anyone ever bought tires with them?  Will they come down a bit to match online prices?  Thanks for the tips.

I also need to know where to buy tires or where to get them mounted that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

fwiw, I usually get my tires from Southwest Moto http://www.swmototires.com/

If you pull the wheels and bring them in, Cycle One in Midwest City mounts and balances tires for what I thought was a reasonable price. Although I don't remember how much it was - they were considerably cheaper than Oklahoma Honda! But, you gotta watch them to keep them from scratching up your rims.

Make some calls and check around.  Smile

Yeah I checked out southwest and they seemed like great prices.  How long does Cycle One want the wheel for?  Could I drop in and wait, or do I need to drop it off?  And when you say you have to watch them do you physically mean standing over there shoulder?

Hard to say how long Cycle One will take, just have to call and see how busy they are. Sometimes they've been able to do it while I wait, sometimes I've just left the wheels (and new tires) with them, and picked up the next day - those have been the times when they've scratched the wheels the most! If you can, I'd recommend watching them...it may not help with their quality control, but it won't hurt!

Since you'd be coming down from Edmond, they might be able to mount and balance while you wait, again, just have to call ahead.

I'd be more concerned with who is going to do the mounting than the purchasing.  I've seen far too many grease monkeys change tires without giving a flip about whether they scratch up a rim or not.  "You can't change a tire without scratching a rim."  I actually heard that once.   Thumbsdown

I have a guy here in town that does ALL my tire changes.  He takes his time and I've never had a scratch on my wheels.  I also buy my tires from their shop, but they're by no means the cheapest.  The Busa I don't worry *as* much about, but I still like it taken care of.  My TLR though, I have Marchesini wheels on it, and if a scratch were ever placed on those, there would be holy hell to pay.

If you're lookin' for the cheapest tires in town, I don't know the answer.  I buy my tires from one place, and I know they're not.

Jim Anderson? That name sounds familiar. Was he the service manager at Oklahoma Honda back in the mid 90s? Appreciate the info. I'd prefer to spend my money with local folks, but had stopped after being raped so many times....

Head over to Oklahoma Honda and see Mark Anderson.  He is the service manager over there.  They serviced my VFR when i had it and a great group of guys to deal with.  He replaced the front Pilot Power on the aprilia and cut me a great deal on it.  Tell him Aaron sent you!

+1 on Complete Cycle.
I wanted Michelin Pilot GT's (a new tire last year) and few shops could even find them and Jim beat all the local shops on price, mount and balancing was fast and resonable.
I like to give local guys my buisness and this shop has earned mine.
