What started out as a night of IPA, turned into my first Scotch experience.  One of the guy half of the couples we were with is a Scotch guy- at his house.  I consider myself an moderate expert on beers, decent with wines, and know nothing about Scotch, although I have paid attention here.  So he educated me a bit.  He had several bottles of various single-blend Scotches- one of which he loved, most of which he enjoyed.  He then told me about this one, which was far too smokey for him (he's more of an earthy guy).  I really liked it- a blended Johnny Walker double black.  Very smokey- but in the stout and porter dept, I LOVE a smokey brew.  After smelling this, I really liked sipping it.

I notice a lot of you say to add a splash of water to "wake it up".  Is that recommended for something like this?  Chilled or no (I had it straight up in a glass)?  I'm an admitted newb, but I enjoyed it.   Thumbsup

Some say you must only drink scotch neat. Others say a drip of water is what you must do. I say try it both ways and drink it the way you like best. I'll even though an ice cube in which is sacrilege but I don't care. I love scotch but my wallet doesn't.

Tonight is Girls' Night Out, and my girlfriend promised to stock the limo with beer. I was excited until I found out she thinks Coors Light is beer. Sigh. I'm having a lager or two before we leave, and I'm sure the Cuban restaurant will have a good selection of alcohol. I'll take any and all suggestions! I'm not too well-versed on mixed drinks.

So how did the evening turn out drink-wise? I thought of a Pisco Sour or a Caipirinha, but those are not 'Cuban' per se.

I ended up with several different iterations of mojito and a couple of white sangrias that were wonderful. I'd never heard of a caipirinha, but they had a bunch of those on the menu. I'll have to try one of them next time!

It was a busy weekend with lots of beer-drinking in different venues.  Some of the better brews enjoyed were:

Thursday night at Firewaters in Atlantic City - Rochefort 8, Weyerbacher Merry Monks, Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale, Weyerbacher Blithering Idiot

Friday night at the Tun Tavern in Atlantic City - Various house brews, their Belgian Double was pretty decent.

Saturday beer tasting with friends - Nostradamus, Monks Flemish Ale, Ovila Quad, La Trappe Trippel, Maudite from Unibroue

Sunday family party - Le Freak from Green Flash Brewing Company, La Trappe Quad, Kwak

Good gravy it was a fun weekend

+1 I have tried various scotch whiskeys all three ways, but so far for the most part, straight up at room temp is getting the win.   Bigok
