Just some FYI i came across the other evening.
It seems that Maryland toll facilities have been charging bikes with sidecars and bikes pulling a trailer as 3 axle vehicles. This is a $9.00 toll charge.

I have been told that ABATE met with Maryland's DOT and got them to agree that these are to be charged the normal rate as a regular bike. The only catch is you need to use the cash only lanes and have the cashier override the charge in the computer. If you use the EZ PASS lass it will charge the $9.00 rate.

It seems there are sensors in the roadway that register the number of axles. A sidecar has no axle, it's a spindle, but the system picks it up as an axle as the 3 wheels are offset so it crosses 3 times.

Anyone come across this?

Sounds like a good reason to set the GPS to avoid toll roads

I don't pull a trailer (on the bike) or have a side hack.  But -

What about leaving the EZ pass at home (or shield it in a case) and just cruise through the EZ pass lane let them take a picture of you and charge you after the fact after you drive through the toll?  If they charge you the higher rate, ask them to show you the picture, then use the ABATE ruling.

If I forget the EZ pass, I don't bat an eye anymore going through the tolls.  They'll do a lookup on your plate, and either charge your EZ Pass account, or send you a ticket if not an EZ Pass customer.
