Did anyone purchase the factory Yamaha hand guards for their FJR?

If you did can you provide some pictures? How well do these work?

The reason why I ask is I have a chance to buy a used pair. (Most just install the V-Strom Guards)

You can find them on this page. This is the Yamaha Canada site which is a bit different than the U.S. site. A yamaha rep once told me that we are closely affiliated with Yamaha Europe.

http://www.yamaha-motor.ca/accessories/accessory_list.php?group=M&model=1783&submit_x=6&submit_y=3&page=2

Bungie....I am thinking the same as you. They are huge and from what I can tell here, very imposing on the bike.

Chris speaks no lies. The best cost/performance mod I've done.

Seriously though, I wouldn't call those thing Yami is selling hand protectors, sure they might stop a stone from dinging off your knuckles, but their not going to do much as a wind block, their just to far from your hands.

Bungi:

It looks to me as if they just attach to the mirrors & sort of work like a windscreen. I was just curious as to if they actually worked. There is a fellow selling them up here (Genuine OEM) for about 125 bucks. I believe I can probably do the V strom guards for the same or less, and they would look a lot less intrusive & function better too.

Actually, the V-Strom hand guards will cost you about half of that.  And I'll also vote for it being an excellent farkle.

Installation tips and a hardware list are here:  http://fjrtech.com/getdbitem.cfm?item=30

(That is, by the way, the best price I've ever seen on those Yami guards, but I still like the V-Strom solution better.)

Well the choice is yours. My VStrom guards were $80 Cdn (full kit, including mounting hardware). Took about 15 minutes to put on. The only downsides to these guards are that they do obstruct a little bit of the rear view through the mirrors, depending on your windshield, the guards may hit at full lock (close on the Cal-Sci medium) and, if your winter gear includes some big ass gloves, you may get some interference between the lever and the guard, though I never have.. hell, I didn't even break out my insulated gloves last year! They work that good!

You guys convinced me on the Strom guards. Going out to order them up today.

I have rode the FJR in some pretty bad weather and really the only place of discomfort was my hands. I think these will be the cats meow.

Thanks for the link!

I have mine almost installed. Very easy, and half the price of what the guy up here was advertising the Yamaha's for. I am into it all for about 70 bucks CAD.

The Suzuki guards went on pretty easy. The only thing I have left to do is dremel where the ends connect to the bar end weights.

I bought the Suzuki installation kit & it came with new end weights I could have used but they were considerably lighter than the FJR weights, so I decided to dremel.

Keep us posted on the price of the BMW guards. I am just curious.

For those of you who are scared of the dremel instructions on the Suzuki guards, don't be. The dremel work took about 5 seconds a side. Very easy & simple.

I would not hesitate to guess that the BMW guards will be quite a bit more than Suzuki's.

Funny, I didn't have to touch mine with a Dremel. Mind you, I've got those 'stitch bar ends mit der helmet locks on them.

I would bet this is the case. You would have had to dremel out the stock ones.

I bought a Suzuki kit which provided Suzuki bar ends which I could have used, but they were quite a bit lighter than the stock yamaha bar ends, so I dremeled.

As for the BMW covers. He may have to wait for a "quote" which will probably include a added bike option with the guards.  Lol

bob's did not know - said they were $107 - and could return them if they didn't work.

i think the suzuki's are the best way to go for those without throttlemeisters - which leaves me still looking Headscratch

BTW, I finally got to put a few miles on mine on a rather cool day and I am very happy with them!

Only complaint is they take away a little vision out of the mirrors, but not a big deal.

Over on fjrforum, several people have the VStrom guards with throttlemeisters and say they're not a problem.

I didn't want to risk it.  I just took my Dremel and hacked the ends off.

i had thought of that - but was not sure how they'd handle the wind without the end post (the part you hacked off).

i reckon for the price it won't hurt to try 'em Headscratch

Squeezer...

Actually, I have come to the conclusion that without the hand guards, I would be seeing my gloves in the mirror instead of the handguards.

I have got used to them being on the bike, and decided that there is not really a safety issue with the handguards obstructing my vision.  Shrug

I noticed you have a 1st gen FJR and that could be the difference. Not a big issue with my 2nd gen.

So far I can say that these things are a fine addition.

I bought them as last year I rode through some nasty rain storms, and decided that the only place that I was suffering was hand protection. (I don't have heated grips or gloves, or waterproof gloves).

As my luck would have it, not one rain storm this year. But I believe that when this happens, I will like the guards.

Well its been raining here in North/Central Ontario since Monday. Today being Canada Day and having the day off (and an employer who REFUSES to let you take off a Friday or Monday in its place), I decided to hell with it and went for a 400km ride in the rain.

Its true, a sucky day riding is MILES better than a good day at work!

Now, handguards, the difference they make in the rain is phenomenal. Its got to be *REALLY* coming down before your gloves get wet. In fact, a few weeks back I rode through about 2hrs of pretty hard Wisconsin rain wearing my mesh gloves.  They were basically dry until we stopped to grab a hotel for the night. Those hand guards are on my top 3 mods to my FJR with price being no object.

It's official. The guards were the most inexpensive and 2nd best mod to the FJR (my PC III was the 1st).

It is just amazing how well they protect ones hands. I rode without gloves for a short hop on the highway, and really, I did not feel any wind or bugs at all.

Still have not met a rainstorm worth noting though.

It'll happen, probably this fall sometime it'll be around 10C and the rain will come down. They'll move from 2nd best to first place after that. Guaranteed.

Unfortunately, the same here too. We just had a kick-ass Labour Day long weekend though. 24-27C and sunny for 3 days straight. Hope it holds, leaving for Tennesee in 10 days.

Squeezer-
How are your hand guards holding up with no bar end support in the long term? Issues with the mounting hole wallowing out or excess stress to the bolt?
I really like this solution as I have some super heavy custom made bar-ends that fit really close and don't wanna move/adjust things.

Trying to decide between these or hippo hands.

The handguards float back a little sometimes, especially when I smack them into the Vstream when pushing the bike around the garage. I think I push them forward maybe once every couple of weeks. I tighten the screw whenever I check fasteners, but it usually doesn't budge.

In other words, three seasons now and no real issues.   Smile

Just what I wanted to hear Smile

I was wondering if they'd work their way backwards and mess with the levers, paricularly the front brake and actuate the brake lights.

Sounds like this might be the ticket.  I was really hoping to find a better solution than Hippo Hands.
