KTM SMT vs. Triumph Tiger 1050, Ducati Multistrada 1100 and Benelli Tre-K.

"It looks fantastic.  It's the bike I'd most like to polish in the garage".

The Multistrada?  Really?  I don't trust anything this guy says.

that was a nice video.  The KTM is #1 in their view, but it seems their main beef against the Ducati was the uncomfortable stock seat.  Which is about the first thing that is ditched anyway!

Hey, it's the best I could do, alright?  I can't help it if MCN was the only English-speaking magazine that posted a comparo video on YouTube!  Twofinger

Love the KTM V twin, Love the KTM tellis frame, Love the underseat exhaust and Love the Trax bags.  So is it over 5 gallons of fuel and over 40 mpg?  If so it's everything I want in a SPORT-tourer!!!

The KTM website claims 5.02 US gallons (19 liters).  I have no idea about fuel mileage.

Expect 38-42 MPG which would yield a tank range of 200 miles.

Still no confirmation on the KTM US website that this bike is actually coming to the States....   :pokestick:

No confirmation on my local dealer site either - they have the 2010's listed, with neither the SMT, SMR990, or RC8R listed.  The only source for the news that I have seen is the original link...

Anyone confirm the SMT's arrival with their dealer?

Don't toy with me man!  This is one of the few bikes I'd replace the Multi with (once I can buy one used, that is).  Of course if Honda brings over the CB1100F, or if anyone brings over any big retro standard all bets are off.

Cycle World December says it "appears" to be coming in 2010.  Touchy fueling and excessive driveline lash are cited, but otherwise a pretty good review.

I asked the international tiger1050 board on their in-market comparison between the two bikes.  The impression is that the KTM has edgier performance.  The Tiger has similar levels but with a more livable feel.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new SMT.  Between this and the new Duc, it's an exciting year for tall streetbikes.

I wonder if there will be any additional options or features for the US market on this bike? (ABS, different stock luggage, etc)

I am just happy that they are bringing this thing over! This bike and the Multistrada 1200 are on my short list. Decisions, Decisions....

Thanks for the brochure link.  That SMT is tasty.  Any word on price?

Not that I know of.  It may not be a big improvement over your Tiger, though.  The suspension may be better, but that's a relatively inexpensive fix.

Regarding the oil filter and screens, I'm assuming the STM's motor will be the same as all other LC8s too based on the fact I see the remote oil reservoir.  The LC8 uses a dry sump system to keep the motor as low as possible for weight hence the need of the remote oil reservoir.  There are two screens to clean and one oil filter to change.  Also, oil is drained directly from the motor and as well as the remote reservoir.  It's really not that bad comparred to other bikes.  Only the Adventure is a pain because you have to remove one of the two fuel tanks to access one of the oil screens.

i've read a lot of complains about this oil change (mostly regarding the ADV) but this is actual, useful information.  thanks for posting the details.  Thumbsup

Damn. I'm loving my Uly so far that I got a month or so ago, but, this is the bike I really wanted. I didn't think it'd come to the US anytime soon. Looks perfect!

I did one extra oil change on my SMT (long story) myself. There are two drain plugs (sump + engine) and to drain all the oil one has to undo a couple of hoses and fish out the filter. But all in all it's not a big deal as everything is easily accessible. I had a full fairing Suzuki before and just unscrewing the oil filter behind the fairing, in between the headers was much more aggravating.

CONFIRMED   Bigok

I contacted my local (100 miles distant) KTM dealer:

"Please advise, is the SM-T coming to Ontari-ari-ari-O?"
That's Canada guys...  Wink

President "Dave" replied:

Quote
Yes sir! Price will be announced this week. I was in California last weekend at the KTM Street Launch. Got to ride the RC8s at Laguna Seca and take a 100 mile trip through the mountains on a 990 SMT & 990 SMR. The SMT will be my pick for a demo next year. What a cool bike!
