+1 .  Just don't go through Tijuana -- I've heard (mostly through advrider) that really every other border crossing out of Baja is just fine.

TJ really isn't that bad. I go there monthly (or so) and know some cool places to go. Coming back through the border can be work but you just lane split to the front of the line and all will be well.

Great ride report!

So what is winter like in Chicago anyways? All I have heard is that it aint pretty. I would imagine that you must get a lot of lake effect.  Glad to hear you are getting some riding in Vivid.  Up here its snowing again (no surprise).  I wonder how many STN'rs actually are able to get on 2 wheels through the winter.

This winter has especially sucked. January and February were very cold (most below zero days in like 70 years on record) and lots of snow, it’s snowing right now, it’s been snowing since Saturday afternoon and the forecast say it’s gonna snow next weekend too. There is no end to this winter and the ground hog said that Spring is on the way Crazy

I usually get out on the street bike once or twice a month, even in January or February there is a always a nice day here and there but not this winter  Sad

Yeah, it can be really, really daunting at first but you just get used to it. It is pretty easy on the Multi. A little tougher on the Superbike because of riding position, heavy clutch, and lack of steering lock. I made this trip one time on my old RT, two-up in the rain before and that really, really sucked!

If you make this trip again let me know. I head down there as much as possible and am actually leading a group of fellow Duc riders down this next weekend.

I still want to go to those wineries that you see going from Tecate to Ensenada though!

I feel your pain Vivid!  0 degrees F is cold, that is -18c.  Not exactly fun at all.    Our average temp here in Cold Lake for jan and Feb is the same, sometimes as getting colder, like -40 where the 2 scales meet.  Not bad if you are of Inuit decent.  Spring should arrive sometime in the next 2 years.

Stay warm

Great report as usual Bluepoof.  Love your writing style and photography.

BTW, except for the Mexico part, you just went through "my world" in SoCal.  The Beach Cities exit and all those beach towns....that's my world.  That and the roads around Escondido/south eastern San Diego County.  I think I've driven/ridden through just about all those roads that you did.  It's very refreshing to hear your opinions of some of those roads and the scenery and points of interest that you ran across.  I tend to bitch a lot about the "destruction" of the California coastline this far south of CA.  I think you got the idea of where I was coming from.  Compared to the Central Coast that is!  I can't believe you guys stayed on Hwy 1 past Long Beach--blech!   Lol

Thanks for sharing.

great little trip. i grew up in the "beach cities," living in san clemente and working in dana point. i've been to baja several times in cars, and HATE crossing in TJ. I've never gone across at Tecate, but rather at Calexico-Mexicali. Tecate sounds even easier.

you lane split to the front of the border crossing? i've always wondered what i would do if crossing on a motorcycle. wait in line? split to the front? certainly at some point you had to cut in front of a car at or near the front of the line. any flak from the cagers?

I was told by a Mexican policeman to split to the front of the line (and I told Blue this before her trip). Its seems that it's expected down there. Not sure about the south-bound crossing though Shrug

The cagers were actually the ones who would roll down their windows and tell us to lanesplit.  One time we were stuck waiting in line for a few minutes because a Toyota pulled over to block us from splitting and the car next to us kept trying to convince us that "it was OK" to split...she didn't seem to understand that we were being physically prevented from it at the time. You are very correct DD. The southbound crossing is the same. It is CA so you can lane split and the southbound side does not require you to stop like the NB one does. It gets kinda hairy with the concrete barriers though. I recommend trying to go for the middle lane. Unless you have a really thin bike (the Multi does fine).

They move for you. Trust me on this one. I make this ride monthly and have friends who do it daily (on a Duc 999 at that). It is nerve wracking the first couple of times but gets to be more natural.
