The "Suddenly, I am too old? WTF?" thread got me thinking about what I would give up for someone I loved. Me personally, I wouldn't give up a damn thing because the love of my life wants me too. One exeption would be if it was something destructive: Excessive drinking, drugs abuse, WOW, etc... Non of which I do by the way.
What say you?

It's easy to say "no", of course, but I went with the "damn good reason" option.

I'm open to discussion on anything. And I'm usually pretty good as being both sides of any discussion, no matter how hard I may dig into my given position on it.

In the case of motorcycling in particular, it was something that was a part of who I am before I even met her. She knew I rode when she got involved with me and she knew I rode when she married me. Frankly, if that's going to be what kills us, it's her issue, not mine.

Sounds like you would have done well if you married my wife. That's my vote as well, for pretty much the same reasons. Part of being a partnership is taking that bullet sometimes even if you'd rather not, but if there's a REAL good reason, yes. I'm not one dimensional, and she's worth taking the occasional lumps.

Option 1.  Any sort of substance abuse would get stopped, but nobody who understood me would ask me to stop riding, and certainly wouldn't make it be an ultimatum.

^This.  We had that discussion when the relationship turned serious.  I had already been down that road with others, wanted it known up front that there were a few things I was unwilling to change.

I chose the damn good reason option.  The way a look at it, marriage is about compromise, give and take.  So, when issues come up you need to be flexible and sometimes that means taking one for the team.  However, motorcycling is on my list of untouchable things that I will not give up.  This was something that I also took part in before they met me, so I can't be expected to give up something that's that important to me.  I guess coming from a single guy's perspective, this will just be a part of my screening process.  I'm just going to be crystal clear that there are some things that I can let go, and some that I can't.  This one I can't.  I'd be willing to limit my riding depending on family issues (ie. kids, multiple family gatherings coming up, etc.) but under no circumstances will I give it up.

would not give up m/c's for anyone.  deal w/ it or you're gone.  if it's something that deep down i know is not good for me, or my family, or friends etc (like drugs, violence, theft, adultry, alcohol, aggressive driving, etc.) i would try and let them help me overcome my issues.  if it's something they want me stop because they think it doesn't fit the mold of how they were programmed growing up, piss off.

Well to give up mororcyling would require a significant sacrafice of flesh on her part.  I was meant to ride, and I will ride.  If not the bike, then more of her.  Maybe 15000 miles of riding her a year and she will want you to go get a bike again to give her a break.
