2010 Season Motorcycle Brain Cramp Thread

New riding season + non-riding brain equals motorcycle brain cramps.  We all get them so start posting and help someone avoid a nasty brain cramp

So here is my first brain cramp of the season:

I had some grinding noises coming from my front rotor on my GL1800 which I assumed was some sort of contamination. So I dropped the pads, cleaned them up, popped them back in. Pressed the brake lever a few times to set the pistons against the pads and did a quick road test. Everything is good.

Two hours later, I am on the bike coming up to a red light. My right hand is off the bars messing with my left cuff sleeve, so I go to brake with my pedal and nothing  , pedals drops all the way to the bottom. So I quickly get on the front brake and stop. Then it hit me: Linked Braking System, When I dropped the pads, I never pressed  the pedal to set the front pistons that are linked to the pedal against the pad.

Fortunately for me I was going pretty slow, just coasting to the stop, hence messing with my cuff instead of covering the front brake.

I have coasted to a stop at a stop light several times this season, when trying to move ahead with the green light the bike died out.  Starting out in third is not a good idea....

Must also remember to pull the clutch in when approaching red light, or so I've heard.

+1. Riding down the freeway for the first blast of the season when I feel something fluttering against my right leg. Look down and it's the battery cover panel flopping in the breeze like a dead fish. Pin it to the side of the bike with my calf, pull over and stop, put my foot down and the panel falls to the ground. Forgot to put the side panel bolt back in. Ride rest of way home at slow speed balancing panel on gas tank. Doh!

I see you went to the LS(1) school of motorcycle maintenance; why do it once when you can forget crap and do it twice.

At least you caught it and didn't have to pay beaucoup cash for a piece of plastic.

Always remember your helmet strap prior to it slapping you in the neck and chin at 50mph.

Last year i took off thinking i left my glasses siting on the back of the seat. i turned around to look for them not realising i was already wearing them.

I wear glasses also and generally don't mind them except when it comes to motorcycles. Glasses and helmets are the biggest PITA. One of these days I am going to do the LASIK thingy.

I was just thinking 'bout that this weekend.  For years I've worn a Nolan Modular helmet...which makes it very easy to don or remove eyeglasses whenever you pull over to the side of the road.  I bought a Shoei RF1000 full face helmet at the Motorcycle Show 2 months ago...and didn't realize what a PITA it is to put on / take off eyeglasses with the helmet on...and, of course, trying to put on the helmet without first removing your eyeglasses will result in gouging an eyeball out!

It's a common word in professional aviation. In jets, pilots 'don' their oxygen masks during some emergency or precautionary procedures. Pressurization problems...smoke in the cockpit, etc.

Above certain altitudes, if one flight crew member leaves the flight deck ( to use the lav or whatever) the FAR's stipulate that the other crew member is to don their oxygen mask as a precautionary measure. ( although they almost never do in everyday real-world operations).
