Kids grow up so fast! Time for son's first bike!

Dirt bike that is. We've been perusing the shops, and he can flat foot every one of the 50's,. and most of the 90's and 110's. He's mastering his bicycle quite nicely.

So, I agreed that if he kept up the practice on the bike, we'd buy him his first dirt bike.



We're looking mostly at the used market, since I seem to be able to find the Hondas and such a couple years old for around $500. I would like something that would last through him, and be able to be handed down to his sister. Also, I would like parts to be readily available.

So, anyone have any comments on the offerings of the big 4? I was originally going to get one of teh cheap knock-offs, but for the cost of a good one used, I figured it would be more beneficial.

I would definitely recommend staying away from the Chinese copies, from what I have heard they are often the same/similar designs, but made with cheaper steel and looser tolerances so not as reliable.

Avoid the Chinese stuff.  I know a few who went down that route and had nothing but trouble.  

On the other hand.  I bought my sons first dirtbike 3 years ago.  It was a non running 1982 PW50.  It took 50 bucks in parts to get it running.  All I ever do to the thing is add fuel and change the spark plug every once in a while.  He rides quite often too.  Yamaha has not changed the PW50 design significantly since the bike came out in '80 or '81.

 Honda XR100. They are virtually bulletproof and will last seemingly forever. I got my daughter one when she was 11. She still rides it at 15.

Looking at an XR100 right now, actually. The problem is, its a bit tall for him. This Saturday, I'm going to check out a PW50 I think may fit the bill.


Second question, where can I find gear for the kids? None of our dealers have anything remotely close.
